Their website brags about the size of their “really big tent” but their Republican City Committee chair, who is also vice chair of the Mass GOP, tells NECN ‘We Do Not Recognize Biden as President-Elect,’
I’ve asked this before, and I’ll ask it again: Why do Newton Republicans put up with Tom Mountain?
Who?
Saying you don’t recognize the president was ridiculous rhetoric when the dems said it about Trump and it’s ridiculous now.
You have choice over your own vote. To say you don’t recognize our president, or to not support the president to succeed, simply weakens your country. It’s as un American as desecrating the flag.
To say not my president, no matter dem or gop demonstrates weak character at best, and nothing more.
In 2016, I left my house to vote for Trump and ended up voting for neither.
I quickly came to despise the man to the point that when Biden was announced winner yesterday I choked up and shed a few years of relief.
We put far too much importance in the role of our presidents. If Biden performs as I hope he will, he will anger both the left and the right. In my opinion, with a country this divided you just can’t make wide policy swings.
You do however need to work hard at finding common ground and compromise on both sides to take care of the business of our country and our people. We all need to get used to baby steps.
With a country so divided, policy swings back and forth every four or 8 years will ultimately ruin our country. If this is impossible we should just have a civil war and get it over with.
I’m an optimist. I think ultimately if the two sides made an effort to understand each other, we would find we’re not so different.
Its going to require both progressives and conservatives to look for common ground and NOT progress toward an agenda. That’s what I hope to see more of in the next four years.
That’s how I see it. This game of party politics just isn’t fun and takes up too much of our collective energy.
The peaceful transfer of power is the cornerstone of a strong democracy. Through this long week when people talked about a fraudulent electoral process, I kept my mind at ease by thinking about the poll workers throughout our city who work tirelessly, carefully, and with professionalism for hours as they carry out their awesome responsibility. We owe them a huge thank you.
While we are so fortunate to have a beloved City Clerk in David Olsen, I also believe that those in this position throughout the country are similar in character and integrity, and anyone who watched this play out on television could see this in action.
The points made above are all good ones. And I echo that in Newton, we have amazing employees of the Elections Commission, a wonderful City Clerk and so many dedicated poll workers.
The issue is, that I find disturbing that an official political party is saying they believe in voter suppression.
The Republican party itself believes in the rights of states, but when applied to this situation, they are saying it does not count. I find that hypocritical.
You can’t have it both ways, either respect the rights of each state and their election laws and do not call this election illegitimate or admit this is about voter suppression.
Like so many other inequalities in our country, they have been here all along, and COVID19 has only exposed these inequalities. Many Americans can now see what they did not see before, that institutional racism, clacissim and sexism is real, even if it did not happen to them directly. Or they are just beginning to see the complexities of this.
So I find it disturbing that a major political party is saying the election is illegal. People trying to express that a candidate doesn’t reflect their values is totally different. It’s not an assault on our whole democracy if you say an individual candidate does not represent your values.
And this is where it becomes dangerous and threatens our system as a whole.
I am a proud American. And while I didn’t like DJT, he was and is currently the President of the United States. He didn’t have my values but he was our elected leader. BUT for him NOT to concede and have a peaceful transfer, it darkens our country. Every President before him who has lost, had had to make the tough call and wish the other person a “congratulations.”
Our country has had many wars, including a Civil War. I have to believe that we, the United States of America, is bigger than one man. He can’t break our country as he leaves office. Our country, its laws and traditions need to be passed on and live forever. Our kids and grandkids need the same stable country and the safety of being an American. Trump needs to concede and start the transition process. No one likes to lose, but as adults we grin and bear it and move on. Our country needs Trump to do this. He can not break our country.
I like Tom Mountain. I find him to be a jovial and friendly guy. When I see him I always ask him whether the Newton Republicans will be holding their next meeting in a broom closet or telephone booth.
Let’s not mince words about Tom Mountain’s statement: It is unamerican and unpatriotic. I’m disappointed.
Saddest of all is I am not surprised by this man’s statement. It will be a relief to slowly swing back to reality-based politics.
Let’s face it. Like Trump, Tom Mountain is an absolutely appalling human being. As the NECN reporter casually notes, Mountain’s position on falsified ballots is a bald-faced lie, and an attempt to turn the country we love into a Hungary-style failed democracy. GOP, please dump this guy. He brings shame on you.
@newtonmom I think it’s important to realize that this isn’t about Donald Trump. DT is insignificant. I think it’s really important to recognize that nearly half of the country supports him. He is both exposed and deepened a riff exists in our country that will exist long after he is gone. Both sides now have a such a deep mistrust for each other that nothing lasting can get accomplished. My hope is that Biden recognizes this and can bring us together. What Trump supporters and Biden supporters believe about each other is not true. As people we have much more in common.
Reading your post it seems that you think that DT is the problem and I just felt it important to point out that he’s just the tip of the iceberg. DT’s followers are not concerned with solving and improving our quality of life
they are concerned with regaining power at all costs.
A country split in half, with two sides working against each other will become weaker and weaker and weaker.
From health care to the environment to equality, The progressive left is impatient for large scale change. Problem is The rural right isn’t up to speed with these changes and you think they’re stupid.
Problem is you need them. Lasting legislative change cannot happen with half the country not supporting it.
So I think the road is much longer than people think. It’s going to require authentically befriending Trump supporters. building friendships on what is common between people a d finding places where we can agree and compromise. Baby steps.
I’m typically a glass half full type of person but I’m not currently optimistic.
