I’ve just stared to watch. But I thought it was more than a little awkward to have one of the moderators (Bolling) introduce a candidate as “my buddy Jesse Mermell.”
Less awkward than the failure of the Globe to disclose at all that, according to The Intercept, Jake Auchincloss’s mother is a close friend of Linda Henry, “the managing director and owner of the newspaper [who] is regularly involved in editorial board decisions.” Globe sportswriters can’t report on the Red Sox without stipulating that John Henry owns both the newspaper and the team. But an endorsement in an election for the US Congress? No big thing.
“A close friend” is not the same as an ownership stake. There are clear rules for what constitutes a conflict of interest.
