This is it for West Newton’s Lumiere. According to Boston Magazine, the last day for the bistro will be Feb 29. But they’re holding a “Last Supper” a few days before on Feb. 20. And, of course, you can celebrate Valentine’s Day there too.
The restaurant opened to much fanfare in 1999 and changed hands in 2015, but the Boston dining scene isn’t what it was. There is word that the restaurant may change owners again, but would likely be something different entirely. If you want to go way back you may remember the location as a Brigham’s.
All that said, Flora’s Wine Bar will soon be open right across the street in the former Coney Island space. I had an email from the owner over the weekend saying that it should be open in the next 7 to 10 days.
Per the Boston Magazine article, “Lumière was unable to find its footing in a dining era that demands more casual-feeling neighborhood restaurants.”
“Casual-feeling neighborhood restaurant”: Just bring back Brigham’s or Brigham’s type eatery to the same spot. IMHO Newton needs more restaurants like that.
I used to take my kids all the time to the Brigham’s on the spot, across the street from NCSC, their daycare center. Later on the family dined two or three times a year at Lumiere- we still do. The atmosphere was casual and its food delicious. The prices were high but not out of line for such cuisine.
We will miss Lumiere, a great restaurant.
I heard from a Lumiere staff member that the restaurant was sold and the new owners are planning renovations before opening it as a more casual restaurant with a larger bar and offerings like flat bread pizzas.
I think what Lauren describes sounds much more suited for our neighborhood. I liked the idea of Lumiere in theory, but it always just was impractical for our family. Frankly, I’d love something like a Brigham’s.
I’m also really curious about Flora’s Wine Bar. It’s such a small spot but it could be really cozy.
Just today I noticed that the “for rent” sign in Shing Yee/La Tate is gone. I’m hopeful that something new goes in there soon. A lot of changes in West Newton Square these days, but I’m optimistic that it’s good.
Now I just want a place in West Newton to get a sit down breakfast!
