On her third try, Julia Malakie has handily won a seat on the Newton City Council, beating first-time candidate Carolina Ventura.
Results:
- Malakie — 1119
- Ventura — 898
Councilor Barbara Brousal-Glaser did not seek a third term, opening up the seat.
Councilor-elect Malakie ran for the Ward 3 at-large seat in 2015 and 2017.
Congratulations to Councilor-elect Malakie. If she can nurture people like she does trees, she’ll be very successful.
Congrats Julia! Let’s get a tree program going that makes Newton the price of MA! Please keep posting on Village 14, even if you can’t be a moderator now.
Carolina, I hope you run again for something, anything. Run for at-large councilor! I’d vote for you in a heartbeat. Please stay involved.

Dulles, such formality. Call me Fig. ;-)
Congratulations to Julia Malakie. I’m confident she will be a great addition to the City Council.
Thanks also to her opponent, Carolina Ventura. The city is well served when highly qualified individuals are willing to take on the challenge of running to serve the public good in what is all too often a thankless role.
@Fig – is Figgy okay?
This has been the most disappointing outcome to me. I hope Carolina sticks around politically.
Lisap, of course Figgy is ok. I also like Sean’s puns. Re-fig-erator, and such.
Mary, Mary, Julia is terrific on many issues. We disagree on development, but I’m happy the city will have a voice speaking for the trees and tree planting.
And I’m hoping Carolina will run for at-large next time so I can vote for her.
A likely “aye” vote for Webster Woods. Good!
I hope we haven’t heard the last of Carolina. This is very disappointing to me
