Many restaurants predate what is now Brewers Coalition at the corner of Walnut & Washington Park in Newtonville
Can they all be named — and dated? There are many. Feel free to discuss.

I love this post Jim … a little crowd sourced local history.
I do know what was there 40 years ago when I lived around the corner but I’ll leave it someone else to take a crack at it first.
Genghis Khan ( Chinese )
Rick,
A correct name of one, but incorrect food genre.
C. Tsars
Newtonville times
No idea on the dates.
There was also a fancier Greek/med place there I used to love with velvet curtains.
Palmyra was there at the time Steve’s Ice Cream first opened next door.
Several more restaurants still to be named.
(BTW, Genghis Khan was Mongolian Food, not Chinese)
Extra Bonus: identify what the establishment was before the series of restaurants, and its name.
Aridadne
That’s Ariadne
Duckeorth
Ah, Ariadne. That bar was awesome. Low key, good wine, good barkeep.
OK I’ll pitch in. 40 Years ago it was The Sillouette
There’s still more on the restaurant list (from Silhouette…to… Brewer’s Coalition).
Extra extra bonus: Which restaurant featured live entertainment, and what was it?
Well, northern Chinese then. Mongolian food and northern Chinese food share a lot. I have actually been there ( northern China)
Btw, I would like to point out to the mixed use enthusiasts that look forward to a wine bar, or what have you, in Washington place, how fickle and from a landlord’s point of view, how unreliable restaurants are as tenants. The long list here demonstrates that fact. Not to mention the extra ventilation and noise reduction you need if there are APARTMENTS right upstairs.
Good luck to those renters….
Not to mention creatures, who inhabit all food establishments, no matter how upscale. (They’re just better controlled in the latter.)
Still sad about Karoun closing on Wash street. So many memories….
Huckleberrys
Huckleberry’s was there after Genghis Khan. Owned and operated by the Gilligan family who lived in Auburndale at the time. American bistro.
Cottage Crest? A long time ago?
Rick, while I defer to you, I do recall that the Genghis Khan menu was a bit odd; more meat and dairy than typical Chinese in my experience, but same sweet sauce which makes it all taste the same — at least take-out. And with a name like Genghis Khan, well…
Before restaurants, there was a pharmacy which delivered (before it was routine to do so).
I believe Silhouette was where Aji is now. Genghis Khan had hot pot – so much fun for my boys.
I thought the Cottage Crest was in Waltham? Don’t remember it being in Newton….
@Dave B: did you mean Cottage Doughnuts?
@Pat. I could be mistaken about cottage Crest. But I still wax poetic about cottage donuts which was I washington street, with another location in Newton corner..
Anyone remember Elevenses which was in th Aji space?
Great name. Not so sure about the overall concept….
Since no takers yet on bonus question — restaurant with and what live entertainment — here’s a clue: navel
Karoum across the pike featured belly dancing.
So did Palmyra (for at least a short time). Cross Pike competition!
Art Carroll’s in Newton Highlands where O’Hara’s is currently located. This was a neighborhood barroom, dark, dingy and the clientele was not all that friendly. but it sold great pizza. A much better option was The Beacon Restaurant in Newton Center on Beacon Street adjacent to Murray’s liquors. The Beacon sported a warm and gregarious bar scene and the food was absolutely superb.
Cranberry Bog?
OK, the site’s pre-chain dominated pharmacy prior to the series of restaurants: Park Pharmacy
I remember The Beacon! I believe we ate there the day we moved to Newton. Just a few short years ago. The restaurant business is unstable, but that corner site on Walnut Street must hold some sort of local record for turnover. The game can also be played in reverse. We ate at Sol Azteca down the alley off Union Street a few weeks ago and were thinking it was already here when we arrived, and that was in the mid-70s. Does anyone recall for certain?
Was Ariadne around in the late-oughts, i.e., 2007-09? Whatever the name, a friend of mine — who plays Greek/Mediterranean/Eastern Europe music — had a gig there once not long after it opened. Fairly certain it had live entertainment on a reasonably regular basis, at least for a while.
Wow.
I remember Ariadne, Duckworth Lane, Newtonville Times, and maybe C Tsar’s (I think).
FWIW, I’m a fan of Brewer’s and hope they stick around.
Ah the Newtonville Times…back in the day when Newton had two newspapers and a bar that sounded like a newspaper.
Bonus question – what was the name of the restaurant that was in the church at the corner of Newtonville Ave and Walnut St, beside the pike?
I only have the question, not the answer.
Wasn’t there a bagel place on that block around 2005ish? I think Elevenses might have been what replaced it.
Restaurant in church on corner of Newtonville Ave was Paris 26 (or some number)
