First term Newton City Councilor Becky Walker Grossman will become first candidate to officially enter what’s expected to be a crowded Democratic primary since Kennedy pivoted to a Senate run, the Globe reports.
Headline and post updated to reflect that Ihssane Leckey, a democratic socialist from Brookline, had announced a challenge to Representative Joseph Kennedy III before he announced his primary bid to unseat Senator Ed Markey.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one term councilor with a very thin record of accomplishment markets herself in a diverse, multi-candidate field. She refers to herself as a “former prosecutor” but in this day and age that’s not compelling, and as Kamala Harris is finding out, for many people it’s a turn off. Of course her biggest advantage is her father-in-law’s proven ability to raise campaign funds nationwide, so surely she’ll be well financed. But if it’s a Newton City Councilor who I ultimately come to support in this race, it’ll be Jake Auchincloss, who has quickly established himself as one of the city’s most effective councilors, and whose educational/military background is unparalleled. I may disagree with him sometimes, but nobody is ever going to agree with a candidate on every issue. If Councilor Auchincloss is going to run, hopefully he will announce quickly, because there’s no time to lose in campaigning for this highly contested seat.
I am thrilled to be supporting councilor Grossman for congress! As a resident of Ward 7, and somebody that has carefully followed Becky’s votes and accomplishment in city council, I could not disagree more with the disparaging comment made above. Becky has worked tireless, effectively, often doing the hard work behind-the-scenes, to help her constituents and the whole city. She has taken brave stances and made personal sacrifices in her job. Even running unopposed for the council, she ran a top-notch campaign, reaching out to- and meeting so many Ward 7 voters to express her ambitious and progressive vision for Newton. It is a sad state of our society that being a brilliant, well-educated, and hard-working woman threatens so many men, but that’ exactly why we need women like Becky in the highest levels of government.
Becky who ?
After one “productive” term on city council she runs for National Congress?
How has she voted on what issues at city hall ? Answers to that might help describing who she is .
It’s the Newton Democratic party at work. Next we will hear that Fuller will be running against Baker for Governor after her one “productive” term as Mayor.
I was impressed that Becky showed “Political Courage” to vote against the recent salary increases for Councilors.
She will be a formidable candidate.
I applaud anyone who has the courage to do this, but it does seem like a strange decision. Even within the small world of Newton politics, I don’t think Grossman has substantial name recognition. Beacon Hill would be a more realistic goal IMO.
Let’s all thank Sheldon for sounding all of the expected-but-nonetheless-hackneyed dog whistles. After all, why address substantivly a critique when whining works just fine.
As they sort of say, with friends like this Ms Grossman will need no challengers.
There was also a candidate in the race before this. The Globe corrected their headline so it might be worth correcting the V14 headline as well.
Rebecca has never run a contested race. Some of her opponents
will be experienced Boston legislators. She has a tough race ahead.
Good luck to Becky, I have a feeling it’s going to be a crowded race.
This seems like a perfect opportunity to put in a plug for ranked choice voting, which (hopefully) will be on the ballot this year! We are likely about to elect a Congressperson with far less than 50% of the vote, and that is sad. Find out more about Ranked Choice and get involved here:

@Sheldon(with no last name…)
Did I miss something?
Who said, or where was it printed that Becky “threatens so many men”?
I afraid you are looking for a boogie man where there is none…
You do someone who appears to be a quality candidate no favors by rolling this garbage out…
Dog whistle indeed!
Good Luck Becky.
When Joe Kennedy took the seat, wasn’t his experience being a lawyer??? She has a term under her belt which is more than many. It takes a lot to run for office and she deserves support, not unsubstantiated criticism.
