This Saturday get out of your house, out of your car and go for a walk. Walk street to street, house to house and listen to 120+ bands of every flavor, style and genre. The 2nd annual Newton Porchfest is back in town.
Last year’s inaugural Newton Porchfest was a blast. There were bands on front porches, back porches, driveways and lawns all over Auburndale. This year the event has expanded into neighboring Lower Falls and Waban with lots more bands (120+) … and it’s all FREE! thanks to the generous sponsors, musicians, and volunteers who put this extravaganza together.
The weather predictions so far look perfect, so don’t miss Porchfest 2019, this Saturday, June 1, noon – 6 PM. For info, map, and band list, go to https://newton.porchfest.info/. While you’re on the web site, consider making a donation to help support this great new Newton tradition.
Really bummed I’m gonna miss it this year. I had a great time last year!
I know it’s dealing with severe cutbacks in manpower, space, etc., but I can’t help be somewhat disappointed with The Newton Tab’s coverage — or lack of it — of PorchFest. Yes, yes, I know there are all kinds of financial, social, educational, governmental issues which demand our attention, but an event like PorchFest is another window on Newton, and a good opportunity to showcase the diverse musical talents, interests and experiences of people within the community.
For what it’s worth, here’s what The Tab could’ve done: Ask the PorchFest organizers for the name and contact info for 10-15 different acts appearing at the event; reach out to the 10-15 by e-mail with some basic questions — “What role does music play in your life? Why play at PorchFest? Give three examples of what people attending your performance are likely to hear.”
Even if only about half of those contacted respond, chances are you’ll get some nice quotes, perhaps a fun anecdote or two, maybe even something enlightening about music you never knew.
I sent Julie Cohen an email but didn’t hear back from her. I heard back from the Patch. Hope folks will come out on Saturday and have some fun! I’m hosting a funk bank – Funk Me Not! and looking forward to some great music throughout the participating neighborhoods!
Hats off to the organizers!
Good luck, Amy! I don’t want to sound like Grumpy McGrouse here. PorchFest is a marvelous event and hopefully will thrive throughout Newton — maybe eventually in all 13 villages — for many years. That’s the most important, obviously.
