| Newton MA News and Politics BlogGatehouse Media announced today that they have just finalized the sale of the Newton Tab for an undisclosed sum to the City of Newton.

Mike Reed, the CEO of GateHouse parent New Media Investment Group, says “our mission is to deliver high quality and trusted journalism that enrich the communities we serve.  We realized that we were no longer fulfilling that mission in Newton.”.

Said Reed “After a top down review of the last year of the Newton Tab’s local coverage we realized that despite our reporters’s fine work they are spread way to0 thin to meet that mission.. Rather than abandon the Tab we decided to sell it to the independent organization that has provided the majority of Tab local coverage over the past year – the Mayor’s Office”.

Ellen Ishkanian, the city’s Director of Communications says  “We couldn’t be more delighted with this outcome. We think that city owned and operated local media is a great solution to the very real problem of dwindling local news coverage.”
