This just in from the New Art Center in Newtonville
Dear Members of the New Art Center Community, I am writing to inform you of a recent administrative change at the New Art Center. Dan Elias has resigned his position as Executive Director. During his tenure, he made many extremely valuable contributions to the center, for which we are very grateful. We wish him all the best in his new endeavors. We plan to retain interim administrative support for the staff so that there will be no gaps in the operation of our much-loved programs. We will move quickly to assess our needs, and begin the search for a new Executive Director very soon. In the meantime, rest assured that the staff and the board will continue to work to move the New Art Center forward in new and exciting ways. We have a 40-year history of sparking creativity and inspiring creative expression. We look forward to welcoming you through our doors to continue that tradition. Thank your for being part of the incredible community of students, educators, art lovers, friends, supporters and partners in our mission. On behalf of the entire Board of Governors, I invite you to be in touch and join us on our continued journey.Sincerely, Kim Spencer |

I hadn’t heard of the New Art Center, but their website is intriguing- can any V14’ers share their experiences there? Are they primarily offering classes or hosting exhibits? Is it kid-friendly?
Too funny. I was wondering why Dan Elias hadn’t responded to an email I sent last weekend. Five seconds after hitting Send on a new email I came across this post.
@Michael – Yes to all three. They have classes, exhibitions, kid-friendly stuff too. Their premises is a beautiful old church building.
Dan Elias was part of the team that put together the wonderful outdoor exhibition this summer on the Upper Falls Greenway. I’m sorry to see him go.
p.s. The first post I ever wrote for Village14 was about a rather strange happening at the new Art Center – The International Pancake Film Festival. It was an evening of nothing but films about pancakes. It was totally wacky and a great time. In between movies they served pancakes hot off the griddle in the back of the hall
Dan Elias is a special guy. He’s a tireless and savvy advocate for the arts and artists but also has great sense of humor, wisdom and integrity. This is a big loss for Newton. I wish him the very best.
Dan may be discouraged by the enormous task to renovate
the Center. Costs range between $6 and $10 million. This effort
will take years to accomplish and many hours of time and hard work. Whoever replaces Dan will need complete assistance from many Newton residents.
