I don’t get it.
#1 Operates in cash-only mode, about which we know very little. Competes with the established black market. Funded by a super-rich real estate developer. Hires a professional lobbying firm.
#2. None of the above.
This blog would lead you to believe that newton retail will not survive without recreational pot shops.
I wish this blog would spend equal time in promoting other types of retail/offices.
Picture #1 is a MEDICAL marijuana facility! That is far different from a non-medical, presumably recreational, liquor store.
@Greg: Please speak apples to apples! Show us pics of recreational marijuana stores in states, cities, towns where they have been allowed. I bet in a short time they look a lot more like the liquor store in pic 2 above.
Nevertheless, it seems to me that how a store looks is less important than what it purveys. Having said that, I would not be opposed to having liquor stores look more like medical marijuana facilities. While most of us are on the same page in accepting MEDICAL marijuana into society, the value/downside of recreational mj and its ramifications are still not clear. You may be sorry to get your wish!
@Sallee: Jerry is the author of this post, I believe you meant to address those comments to him.
@Bugek – you’re right. Way too much time has been spent by both the the city and this blog regarding a few small retail establishments.
The only reason for that of course is that they are the only businesses in the city who’s fate is going to be decided by a public referendum rather than the marketplace.
Greg: According to the Cannabis Control Commission Regulations that you cite in your earlier post (that I just read):
“A municipality may regulate signage regarding marijuana-related uses, but the standard may not be more restrictive than those applied to retail establishments selling alcohol. ”
So liquor stores will not rise to the more “civilized” level of medical marijuana stores, but recreational stores will stoop to liquor store level! As I said earlier, we need apples to apples comparisons.
@Sallee – How about trying Google street view for places in Colorado. From the ones I have seen out there, they certainly do not look like strip mall liquor stores.
The customer traffic at the average Dunkin Donuts in Newton exceeds the customer traffic at any marijuana dispensary that is currently open in the entire State. But the prohibitionists keep using traffic as a talking point.
@Greg: Mea culpa…sorry to have maligned you.
@Jerry: take that! 😉
@Sally Lipshutz – https://www.nobannewton.org/resources, scroll down to the bottom and you can see three examples of retail cannabis stores in the US.
Oops, sorry for misspelling your name Sallee.
Photo #1 appears to be a photo of my optometrist’s office (amongst other things). On all the occasions I’ve been there, I’ve never seen anyone going in and out of Garden Remedies.
