Not particularly interesting, but man, these old school buildings are hot and sticky on days like this.
Today is a fitting day to ask why our public elementary schools dismiss kids 2 1/2 HOURS EARLY on Wednesdays, depriving them of the equivalent of 9 school days per year. And this is in addition to six early-release days. I ran the numbers, and Newton elementary school meet the BARE MINIMUM (~900 hours) for instructional contact hours required under state law, and that is only on paper. (Various water and bathroom breaks and start-of-day and end-of-day preparations also erode that time). If you would like to know why Newton middle school and high school don’t dismiss students at 12:30 on Wednesdays, look no further than state regulations (990 hours minimum). Wednesday early dismissal is detrimental to our kids’ education and disruptive to working families. U.S. schools already provide fewer hours of public education than other industrialized (OECD) nations. It is a dismal paradox that Newton–which has the resources to be an educational City on the Hill–scrapes the bottom in terms of contact hours. There are less prosperous school districts in MA that at least have their priorities straight.
Early release is on Tuesdays.
Newton South Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors went to school for two hours on the first day.
The non-air conditioned buildings are an issue. It is too hot for kids and students to really learn. Between warmer temps in September and June and more kids with medical issues, we need to do better for having a better learning environment.
