Batten down the hatches, buy shopping carts full of bread and milk, and warm up the plows.
IT’S COMING HERE!!!!
The predictions are all over the map from 5″ to 24″ but everyone seems to agree that we’re going to have some kind of storm starting Monday night Tuesday and it will probably be a big one.
This could be our last snowstorm of the year – so this post can be your one stop shop for commenting on all things involving Newton and snow. Snow shoveling ordinance, overnight parking ban, plowing bouquets and brickbats, snow accumulations, power failure reports, school closing policy, favorite sledding hill ….
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
I’ll get the ball rolling. This past Christmas I posted a bit of a screed about how for the nearly 10 year we’ve lived in Newton, our little side street never ever gets plowed unless we call and complain repeatedly. I am oh-so-pleased to report that for the first time in 10 years, our street has been plowed for every snowstorm with nary a 311 call. On behalf of little Spring St and my neighbor Bobby we extend our heartfelt thanks to the city and the DPW for recognizing that we are in fact part of the city – Thank you!
That’s one of the things I’ve always admired about you Jerry: always the optimist. Naive, sure, but optimistic.
I’ve found that snow removal has not been very good in my neighborhood this year. Blocked curb cuts, neglected city owned sidewalks, etc. They need to step it up a notch. Walking to school has been dangerous.
There is a bobcat parked on Proctor St that needs to be removed before the storm hits
A mammal or vehicle?
Is it time to start experimenting with heated roads so that we don’t need to beat them to death every winter? It’s starting to happen in some places.
No trash pickup tomorrow. One day delay.
No school tomorrow
Milk, bread, cereal, batteries, full gas tank, a generator, flashlights.
Don’t forget toilet paper and a good book, Scrabble game and crossword puzzles!
And check on your elderly neighbors.
This is winter in New England.
You have to buy bread and milk even if you never eat break or drink milk, those are the rules ;-)
Power went off this morning, then on, then off, now on.
Fingers are all crossed in this house.
TV would’nt start. Weather station re-set itself to centigrade. 3-way bathroom light switch blew. Gremlins? Is generator running outside? I’m not going outzide to find out! (Until tomorrow)
Very similar symptoms appeared in two houses near each other on Lewis St. which corrected themselves yesterday. WTF
Nor’easters/blizzards of this magnitude bring with them a grim sort of arithmetic: Is it better to shovel 6 inches several hours apart or a foot (or more) all at once?
Boston has just announced that schools will be closed tomorrow and the snow emergency will extend at least partway through the day.
@essteess – funny you should mention that. My wife and I just debated that very same “grim arithmetic” in the past hour. For the record, my wife is an “incrementalist” i’m an “allonatoncellist”
“Is it better to shovel 6 inches several hours apart or a foot (or more) all at once?”
I’m in the 6 inches every several hours camp!! Anyone know how much snow we have as of 5pm? Seems like 14 inches
Claire, good eye – I read 15 inches!
And still coming down!!! At least it is light and fluffy. Shovel now before it starts melting and freezing!!
Took a walk about an hour ago. Only restaurant I saw open in Newton Centre is #1 Noodle House
Does anyone know whether students have plans for tomorrow’s student walk-out if school is closed? I really love that Revere’s superintendent tweeted this announcement:
Newton schools are closed tomorrow (Wed). Just got the message
Yep.. And amusingly enough the Dr. Fleishman said he would everything possible to not call another snow day!
Ok!! Just got a robo call from Terry Crowley from the office of Setti Warren about a snow emergency on 3/14?
Just got a message that trash and recycling pick up is back on tomorrow taking into account the one day delay. I’m not sure how I’m going to get our bins to the curb. I’ve got my sidewalk in good shape but my driveway plower hasn’t come as of yet and our bins are at the back of our house at the non street end of that driveway. In prior storms we always seemed to be the day that got cancelled to the next week which i hated but i’m not sure this is going to be much better.
My grandmother used to love bread and milk. It was her go-to comfort food. A great way to put to good use all those shopping carts full of it :)
@Jerry – Watching the estimates for Wednesday go from miss to coating to 6-10″ I’m thinking you may have jinxed it with “This could be our last snowstorm of the year” :)
@Patrick Butera – Oh man I don’t want to own this one. My neighbors, and the rest of Newton, will run my out of town if I’ve unwittingly brought one more down upon us. I’m sticking with the rain prediction.
