How are the streets, sidewalks, storm drains, light poles, tree limbs and basements in your village?

Lot’s of houses and stores without power tonight, including in Waban and the Highlands. Waban Market to Whole Foods were closed at 6:30.
When I walked home from the T I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw lights on down my street!!
An ancient oak on the street berm crashed across the street, huge tree blocking my road and tearing all wires, including high voltage, down, ripping service off of my house, and knocking out power for a block or two. This will not be a quick fix. Big mess.
The frustrating part is that I alerted the city tree dept a couple of times informing them that the tree is dead and when it drops it’s taking all the wires with it. They finally came by and just trimmed some branches. Oy!
I only have ice for a few more martinis! If power isn’t restored by then I’ll have to open the wine cellar.
When I drove down East Side Parkway (Newtonville) earlier (around 4ish) a big chunk of tree was down, with tree branches and part of the trunk blocking one lane.
I was watching TV on Friday at about 6:30PM when I heard the loudest noise. Seemed to come from the side of my house. Went outside and discovered a good size branch (at least 12 inches) broke off a city tree. It took the wires off the side of both my neighbor’s and my house. Called it in to the police and were told I was added to the list. With the help of a few neighbors we blocked off the street with our trash/recycle barrels. (Still, there were some idiots who moved the barrels and tried to get by.) Tree Workers showed up at about 4:30AM. Did as much as they could and left. I think they needed Eversource and the Cable Companies to come out and clear the wires before continuing. (On a side note.. Using your SmartPhone as a HotSpot for your laptop when your home cable/internet is down works great!)
Curious, If a city tree damages your property, what is the expected ‘insurance’ procedure? Do you file an insurance claim against the city or do you eat the cost from your own insurance premium?
looking at this house on solon st, looks like a domino… It looks like the neighbours tree fell ontop of their tree, which then fell on the house

We had no power last night but we’re up and running this morning. A bit of water in the basement but otherwise unscathed.
Lost our internet for a few hours but no other issues. We have some dead looking trees near our house on city property that I’ve been asking the City to take care of for at least a decade, so each time we get through a windy storm without property damage is a big relief for those on my block.
No issues that I have observed (and certainly not my house) in the Newton Corner/Jefferson St area. Did see some street water this morner that indicated someone was pumping out a basement, but no power outages, just an occasional light flicker (our house seems to be on a very small part of the grid that tends to be spared some of the more common weather outages, for whatever reason).
I hope those affected get power/service/cleared roads back quickly. Especially Terry (out of martini ice? the horror!)
Thank you for your concern Doug. Martini ice now gone, vintage wine drained. And it’s less than 24 hours!
Zero evidence that Eversource or the City have any interest in our corner of the world. Or perhaps they are in cahoots with developers to force me out and build a marijuana farm here in Valhalla? Ha! It’ll never happen! I’ve got a single malt stash that will pickle generations of Malloys!
I’m on to you Eversource. Give up and get over here..
Tree down across our street, which took power out for a swath of the neighborhood:

Huh. Thought you could embed images on V14. Oh well, here ‘s a link: https://scontent.fbos1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/28471548_10156284081508993_6753116892186969312_n.jpg?oh=c1901f0c4656606b338d35601f8ac700&oe=5B072F9A
@Terry. I’m going to bed shortly. Call in the morning if you want to go to a detox.
Around 6:15 yesterday (Friday) we saw a huge flash towards the West corner of the Highlands or Upper Falls. Does anyone know what it was?
Valhalla has power!
Wow that was close. Almost got down to Grampa’s last bottle of Pappy Van Winkle bourbon.
I have to say that it looked like an invasion of a small country here; Ten large trucks and an army of workers for 12 hours. Eversource, Verizon and the City of Newton contractors were impressive. Well done and very appreciated.
I’m ready for the ride to detox, Bob Burke.
Cheers!
Welcome back to the 21st century Mr. Malloy.
They’ll have to schedule an extra run of the recycling truck to Valhalla Rd this week to deal with all those empties.
We’re probably due for another power outage soon when the Leaning Tower of Upper Falls” comes down.
