Amy Sangiolo — 20-year City Councilor from Ward 4 — announced today that she is entering the race for Mayor of Newton. From her campaign website:
“My name is Amy Mah Sangiolo, and I’m running for Mayor of Newton. I am an attorney, an at-large City Councilor and this is what I’ll bring to the Mayor’s office:
- Open and transparent government
- Accessibility, responsiveness and accountability
- Advocacy for all our residents – to ensure excellence in education and programs and services for our youth and our seniors
- Deep appreciation of our unique villages and neighborhoods
- A drive to fulfill Newton’s potential to be at the forefront of environmental policy and affordable housing.
Newton faces important choices about the kind of city we want to be. For twenty years, I’ve been passionate about education, affordable housing, development, city finances, transparency and accountability in government, and the environment. My pledge to you is to energize, mobilize, and engage citizens as we consider the way forward to make Newton a leader in these areas.
In the coming months, I’ll be hitting the campaign trail, meeting many of you and listening to your issues and concerns. Together, we can build a better Newton. Please contact me with your thoughts and questions. See you on the trail!”
is there anyone who’s not a Democrat running?
Welcome to the contest Councilor Sangiolo. I hope your campaign lasts longer than mine!
Amy is also the author of what I believe is the most comprehensive weekly newsletter about Newton government activities. She’s been writing it for over two years now. Sign up here.
Is Amy giving up her Council seat as Scott and Ruthanne are?
It’s going to be an interesting campaign season!
I’m very pleased that Amy is running. Like Ruthanne and Scott, Amy is highly qualified to be Mayor. Every interaction I’ve ever had with Amy has always been positive. She’s extremely dedicated toNewton, and brings her own perspective to the mayor’s race.
Of course the devil is always in the details, and I’ll be very interested in seeing what positions all the candidates take on issues of importance to me. As I’ve mentioned repeatedly here on V-14, I’m hoping one of these candidates will have the courage to change the dynamic with the City’s property tax exempt institutions. Getting institutions like BC to pay their fair share is absolutely critical to Newton’s future.
Welcome to the contest Amy! Looking forward to hearing more about your plans and vision for Newton.
This a really good mayoral race with
three excellent candidates. Very encouraging for the city.
Congratulations Amy!!!! Just curious, who will be your deputy mayor???
Will Amy vacant her Ward 4 Councilor position?
Councilor Sangiolo tells me she will be giving up her seat.
Interesting indeed. Changes everywhere. There will be a lot of new faces on the Council. Our three Mayoral Candidates are all quality, passionate public servants and will be missed by their colleagues.
Who are the CTE people behind the 3 mayoral hopefuls? Are any elected officials…
@Harry Sanders – What’s a CTE person?
committee to elect: treasurer, campaign chair, vice chair, musical chairman, associate gladhandler, etc.
Certainly a chance Councilor Sangiolo could be our next mayor. And the odds of her making it through the runoff would seem strong. Interesting campaign ahead indeed.
Councilor Sangiolo certainly adds fresh perspective to the race and may help voters to discern differences among all three of the candidates that would otherwise not be addressed without her participation. She is a welcome addition to the race.
Amy Sangiolo has consistently been helpful and supportive of local issues. As a Councilor, she’s a hands-on problem solver. I hope she’s successful in bringing that same dedication to the mayor’s office.
