So far, two veteran City Councilors — Scott Lennon and Ruthanne Fuller — have launched campaigns to succeed Setti Warren as Newton’s next mayor.
Are you satisfied with the choice between these two candidates? Or do you hope someone else will run because there are positions or qualities you’d like to see in our next mayor which you believe are not represented by the current field? Vote in our poll and then explain why in the comments section.

This is a bit early to be asking this question! Please give them a chance to get their campaigns up and running. People need to hear the issues and where each stands. They are both wonderful and very talented people….but please give them a chance.
@Marcia: Actually if someone else is considering running for mayor, now is precisely the time they need to think about it. And I say this as someone who thinks we have two very qualified and capable candidates.
I am waiting for Me. Roche to tell me what to think.
They are certainly two qualified candidates. I really don’t have a bad thing to say about either one of them personally. Both exceptionally nice people. But I do keep in mind that they both voted in favor of a moratorium on medical cannabis dispensaries, which denied hundreds of patients in Newton access to their doctor prescribed medication for four years. For me to vote for either of these candidates they would first have to acknowledge that vote as a mistake, and issue an apology to the patients who were effected. Since I don’t anticipate either one of them doing that, I’m hoping more people enter the race. In fact, I’m sure more people will.
Both leading candidates come with luggage wheels locked in the Democratic party mindset. Progressive effective performance is hampered by institutionalized conventionalism, drowning in knee high swamp water.
I think once nomination papers become available you will see a finalized field. I know a few other possible candidates that are still thinking about joining the race that currently don’t hold elected office but bring other solid credentials.
