Since yesterday was Labor Day, a national holiday, I thought I would check to see whether a certain brunch place that my husband and I enjoy, would be open. I asked hubby to call before we left home to find out. David, the owner, answered the phone and responded to our explanation that we were attempting to see whether his establishment was open or closed for the holiday with: “Of course I’m open. What do you think I am, a politician?”
Yep. I called a place like you and was just told, a little indignantly, of course we are. They did not mention politicians, but I get their point.
We desperately need a national holiday in August to break up the late summer and one of my fondest memories of a two year exchange assignment from Washington with the Massachusetts state government was the celebration of Evacuation Day, Patriots Day and Bunker Hill Day. That was almost as good as my 4 year stint in Rhode Island where we had full holidays on VJ Day and Rhode Island Independence Day on May 15th. Rhode Island was the first state to declare its independence from Britain and they used to do that holiday up big down there. Add up all of these and we could have additional national holidays in March, April, May, June and August. Then add Missouri’s “Turnip Day” and we extend the streak into October. The more holidays the better.
