On a different thread, one of our regular commenters (fignewtonville) said in the middle of a comment. “ I’d like lots of unlikely or impossible things.”
That got me thinking. Tell us some of the impossible or unlikely things you’d like to see in Newton.
All parts of the city treated equally.
Parking meters in Waban
I wish I could exist on a diet of Buff’s Pub, Chinese Food, Cabots and Coffee. I’d last a day. But what a glorious day. Or a day of indigestion.
I wish my singing voice didn’t make people walk into other rooms.
I wish my kids would stop stealing my secret hidden stash of nutella.
I wish my spouse would buy more nutella so I could steal it back.
I wish I’d thought to add Nutella to my list of allowed foods.
I wish the turkeys in my yard would respond to my voice and obey my commands. Having an army of wild turkeys would be awesome. We could steal more nutella. But they just sit there, cluck, and mock me.
I wish the Celtics had better draft luck.
I wish I had magical powers to build magically affordable decking over the Pike. We’d name the new village Fig Newtonland. Change approved!
My first comment was before Jerry said “in Newton”. Whoops. Delete! Delete!
@fignewtonville – i’m so glad you missed the “in newton”. I’m shipping you a case of Nutella. Can’t help with the turkeys though.
I’ll start with water. I’d like gondolas on the river. I’d like this to be true. I’d like swimming in Hemlock Gorge
.. and then some music. I’d like an intimate 50- 100 seat music club that booked great music all year round. I’d like an annual large parade with lots of loud music and floats. I’d like pianos to be distributed on street corners all around the city – oh wait, that one just came true.
I’m still pulling for the Mass Turnpike to be flooded and turned into a tree-lined canal with express barge service to Back Bay Station.
(NB This is not necessarily incompatible with FNV’s decking proposal – in fact, so long as the decking is glass, we could populate the canal banks with palm trees, orange trees, and – what the heck – some of those giant cacti from out Arizona way.)
@Michael – I’m on board. I’ll move my gondolas over to your Mass Pikenal
Zoning in some areas to allow development of affordable housing without going to 40B.
The Newton Public Schools eliminate all early release days.
A restaurant in the new Turtle Lane development in Auburndale. Sigh.
I’d like some Boston media outlet to review at least one Newton Nomadic Theater production.
… and an ice cream shop in every village.
Lots more people on foot, or on bikes, especially kids
I wish for:
Resident only parking near all the Green Line Stops and a magic wand to remove the commuters who park daily in front of my house.
All day kindy for NPS.
No early release Thursdays.
Modern school buildings for all.
potholes to be magically filled.
Dying trees replaced with healthy trees.
A Community Recreational Building (indoor pool, gym, etc) for the community to use
Bright sun shine every summer day and rain limited from midnight to 5 AM daily – just enough – not too much to cause flooding.
Free school buses in Newton
Increase school parking fees for students at the high schools.
A sidewalk on Dudley Road.
An end to the winter overnight parking ban.
All night coffee place
Jen: Yes!
JEffrey! Yes!
Jerry Reilly, love the idea for the music club, especially if it featured folk/acoustic/world music acts, in addition to, say, jazz or classical or pop. And an occasional open mic. There have been attempts over the past decade, I know, to hold ongoing music series at existing venues (such as at the Jackson Homestead), but these failed to pan out for various reasons. But having an establishment of the 50-100 capacity that is dedicated to featuring music regularly would be great.
Robert Wellbourn: Not trying to be argumentative, but honestly want to know: If there isn’t an overnight parking ban during the winter, how do streets get cleared in the event of a snowstorm?
Maybe it’s just the haze of nostalgia, but I remember the 4th of July fair at Albemarle used to have tons of interesting, sometimes quirky vendor booths (like the guy from Waltham who sold overstock or slightly off-kilter T-shirts of good quality for ridiculously low prices). In recent years, it seems like there are less of those around. Wish the fair would be restored to its ’90s glory years.
Wish Petrillo’s was still around! (No disrespect to the current tenants intended.)
A community blog that never crashed and where everyone recognized when participants (but especially me) were joking or seeking to inject irony.
The exact right amount of housing for everyone all mixed in together.
Harmony among all of the villages of Newton.
Healthy large trees all over Newton.
The tiny, winding streets in Newton magically widen and clear themselves when it snows. So will my porches and driveway.
Along with Robert, a parking ban that is only on snowy nights magically enforced.
The Globe reviews the Newton Nomadic Theatre and writes wonderful articles about Newton.
All of Newton’s debts are magically paid and there is an end to austerity budgets.
The middle school kids win their fight to get 4 minutes to change classes and 30 minutes to eat lunch – and an award for taking on the fight to begin with and collecting research to back up their points.
The medical marijuana dispensary finally opens.
High school starts at 8:30 am in the fall of 2016.
Candlepin bowling somewhere.
I believe they have candle-pin bowling at the Windsor Club (as long as you don’t mind renters watching you from the apartment building next door.)
