HISTORIC DISTRICT PROGRESS REPORT AND KEY ENDORSEMENTS

We are happy to announce that a draft public proposal for a Local Historic District (LHD) in Newton Highlands has been completed after months of study and debate by a Planning Committee of the Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Council.  This is wonderful news for our village, for the friends of Newton Highlands and historic preservation generally, and for all those who enjoy leisurely strolls through the  warm and inviting residential streets that radiate outward from our village center.  The Area Council has endorsed this proposal along with the following elected officials who represent our village on the Newton City Council.

  • John Rice, City Councilor, Ward 5
  • Brian Yates, City Councilor at-large, Ward 5
  • Richard Blazer, City Councilor, Ward 6
  • Victoria Danberg, City Councilor at-large Ward 6
  • Gregory Schwartz, City Councilor at-large, Ward 6

VIEW THE PROPOSAL, MAP AND STREET LIST

A letter outlining the proposal’s main points, along with a map and a street list of the proposed district has been mailed to every home, business and other enterprise within the proposed LHD.  These items can be accessed at the Newton Highlands Neighborhood Area Association’s website at www.newtonhighlands.org. The first entry in “Upcoming Events” has a Link to Information on the Historic District”. Click that. The letter, map and street list will be the first three entries.  All these items are still proposals.

APRIL 3rd FUNDRAISER

Approximately $21,000 is needed for professional support to complete the required inventory of every house and other structure within the proposed LHD.  We expect to meet our funding needs with Community Preservation funds that will be strongly supplemented with our own fundraising and volunteer activities.   We are hosting our first fundraiser event on Sunday April 3rd at 2 PM at the Newton Highlands Congregational Church.  This will feature a highly acclaimed presentation on the Historic Homes of Newton Highlands by our Area Council President Srdj Nedeljkovic.

If you are unable to attend this community event, you can still make a tax deductible contribution by check payable to”
