According to WHDH.com, a Newton boy was assaulted on his way to Day Middle School this morning. The story reports that he’s “doing okay.”
Update–Here’s the email from Brian Turner, principal of Day:
I write with some concerning news regarding an incident that took place this morning with one of our students. At about 9:15 AM, while walking to a bus stop, a Day student was assaulted by an adult male and had his phone stolen. Police immediately responded and began an investigation that remains open at this time. The student received medical attention and is okay. If you have any information, please notify the Newton Police Community Services Bureau at 617-796-2103. We will keep you informed if we receive any further information.

These incidents at schools seem to be happening more and more. I hate to say this, but I think it’s time we think about turning on security cameras around and in the schools (assuming they don’t have any). I know it’s an invasion of privacy yada, yada…but when it comes down to safety and privacy, I’ll take safety.

@tomsheff – that incident happened on the way to the bus stop rather than at the school. School cameras wouldn’t have made any difference.

You tell that to the family if this escalates. The violence in this city is escalating, so you tell that to the next family that gets effected. If I have to choose from Liberty and Safety with school aged children, I would pick safety everytime. kids deserve to feel safe when they are at school or after school, etc. Maybe the cameras may not have made a difference this time, but what about the next??

Tom, this happened on Lexington St. in Auburndale. How would having cameras at Day Middle School in Newtonville have helped?

Tricia, I agree that cameras wouldn’t help in this situation, but I think we can agree that things are escalating. Marie, I’ve been wrong in the past (and will be wrong in the future…have you?). as far as the engine 6 episode I went by my personal experience as I volunteered at pine st….Have you ever volunteered at pine st?? Didn’t think so. If you did, at the same time period as I did, you would have the same concerns as I did. I had a man die at my feet at pine st…did you? See I walk the walk…do you? I’ve experienced things.
I’ve never claimed that the violence at the schools are kids, teenagers or adults as I don’t know…do you? But, I can say that there are more episodes occurring at the schools than normal…maybe your blind to it, I’m not.

One last thing Marie, no one is talking about surveillance. Cameras are there taping and when the administration needs it, it’s there for them to review.

Tom Sheff is right on. It’s time to turn the cameras on in our schools. I believe it will at least stop the anti-semetic graffiti going on.

There is a photo and description listed of the attacker on WCVB TV website. Hopefully the link I posted works.
My concern is for everyone but it extremely troubling that this information on Monday was not originally sent out from the NPS or the Police Dept to the entire School system or at a Minimum to the Elementary Schools that are close to that area – Franklin, Burr etc. We should not have learned about it via Village 14 blog and the Local Boston News Channels.
