Mayor Warren’s office announced yesterday that the city of Newton and the Firefighters’ union have agreed on a new contract retroactive to July 1, 2014, extending through June 30, 2018.

“Major highlights of the agreement include the establishing, staffing and equipping a technical rescue unit; requirement that all new Fire Fighters become certified Fire Fighter I-II by the Massachusetts Fire Academy; the establishment of a 35 mile residency requirement, and additional language changes.

Salary increases under the new contract range from 1.5% to 2.5% annually, as well as changes to longevity and the establishment of a hazardous duty stipend.”
