Sweet Tomatoes Pizza opened in Newton Centre in December 1998. The groovy pizzeria was a great addition to the Centre serving not your typical pizza. Sweet Tomatoes Pizza has been booming ever since owner Hedy Jarras opened the doors and continues to serve the same pizza and customers since day one. In 2003 she opened a second location in West Newton with co-owner Elysha Bemis, and in 2007 a third location in Needham with co-owner and husband, Brian Canty.
I do hope residents support Sweet Tomatoes at their other locations. But please don’t forget to support all the other West Newton businesses, many of whom were personally traumatized by witnessing this horrible accident and its aftermath. It would be a double tragedy if their livelihoods were negatively impacted by our avoiding of that wonderful village center because of this sad event.
Great comment Barbara. Thank-you.

I had an opportunity to have lunch today with Mayor Warren, City Councilors Ted Hess-Mahan and Jake Auchincloss, School Committee member Ruth Goldman and former School Committee Claire Sokoloff at the Newton Centre Sweet Tomatoes. Owner Hedy Jarras was there too and was clearly grateful for all the support. She also said the Newton Centre store would be expanding deliveries this weekend so to cover West Newton.

It was great to enjoy a slice with Mayor Warren, Aaron Goldman, Greg, Jake, Ruth and Claire at Sweet Tomatoes in Newton Centre today. @Mayor Warren, I promise I will pick up the check next time.
Since Tuesday night, I have had many conversations with West Newton merchants, residents and others, all of whom are deeply touched by this tragedy, each in their own way, and all of them are anxious to offer their help and support. Each of the West Newton merchants I have spoken to consider Hedy and Elysha and everyone who works at Sweet Tomatoes to be like family, and have offered to do whatever they can to support the owners and their employees at this difficult time. What a great community this is!
I also want to thank Greg Reibman and the Chamber of Commerce, and Newton’s Economic Development Director, Nancy Hyde, for reaching out to me and the owners of Sweet Tomatoes to offer their assistance and support. Sweet Tomatoes has become a favorite place to go for a slice or takeout. Hedy also wanted me to remind everyone that Sweet Tomatoes still delivers! My sincere hope is that Sweet Tomatoes in West Newton will reopen soon.
