Village 14 was told by a reliable source that Ward 5 Alderman at-large Brian Yates had a heart attack. I’ve been able to confirm that he is in the ICU at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
We are hoping he recovers and is on his feet quickly.

Brian, I’m so sorry to hear this news – you’re in my thoughts, and I hope to see you back with us and feeling back to yourself soon.
@Brian:Sending you wishes for a very speedy recovery!Hurry back to Newton in good health!
My thoughts are with you in this difficult time Brian!
Get well soon Brian! I hope to see you back on your feet as soon as possible.
Brian, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Brian, get well soon. We’Re all rooting for you.
Get well soon, my friend.
Brian,
Your campaign sign is up in my front yard, and you have my vote. Looking forward with great hope that you’ll be back on your feet and carrying us forward. Cheers !!!!
Brian, you are a very resilient man. I’m sure you’ll be up and about in no time. I just hope you’re being a good patient. 🙂 You’re definitely in my prayers. And your sign is in my yard too. Please remember that Newton needs you. God bless.
I just checked with ICU at Saint E’s and they told me he is doing “better”. Patient privacy rules mean the hospital can’t give out more that the barest information, but the fact they would use “better” is encouraging.
I talk with Brian over the phone two times a week. This week, I was scheduled to have coffee with him to go over matters affecting the proposed Newton Highlands Local Historic District and some promising new treatments for the hemlock trees at Hemlock Gorge that have been ravaged by the Wooly Adelgid blight. Every time I talk with Brian, I come away knowing a lot more about what’s going on in the Board of Aldermen and City Hall generally. His wit and sense of humor spice up every conversation and he never short changes people about the time he’ll take to go over things they need to know. I know he’s sometimes difficult to get hold of, but once you do, you won’t be disappointed by the results. He loves Newton and the people who live here at least as much as anyone else that lives here.
Get well soon, good friend.
All my best to you, Brian! Hope your recovery is speedy.
Hang in there Brian. We are all thinking about you.
I just talked to Brian at Saint E’s. He called to ask me to get his campaign statement that he had already prepared to the League of Women Voters for the “Voters Guide” mailing they are doing next week. He was joking and in good humor and he wanted everyone to know that he plans to be back in action as soon as possible and yes, he’d like another term on the Board.
@Bob: Good to hear. Thanks for the update.
Best wishes for a fast and full recovery to one of our more unique Aldermen.
Hope you are up and around soon , Brian. Upper Falls (and the rest of Newton) needs you.
