Come kick off the tour of the Nomad’s new play

NewBQImage | Newton MA News and Politics BlogThe rehearsals have been fantastic, the show is ready to go, and the Newton Nomadic Theater is opening its new show, The Beauty Queen of Leenane in Lower Falls this weekend.   Come on down to the beautiful Gregorian Rugs and see some fabulous live theater from the acclaimed Newton Nomadic Theater before they pack up the camels, hit the road and take the show on a four week tour of the other villages of Newton.

Lower Falls has become the theater’s now traditional opening night venue as well as the theater’s home for its very popular Nomad Story Slam (next one on Fri May 22).  As always, we need all the help we can get to fill the  seats, to keep bringing live theater to the villages of Newton.  So tell your family, tell your friends and see the award winning actors Linda Goetz, Lida McGirr, Dave Rich and Matt Phillipps in this black comedy by Martin McDonagh, one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary playwrights.  There’s something special about being able to walk down the street, and see top-shelf theater presented in a theater space created just for the night.   If you can’t get there this weekend, we’ll be coming to Auburndale, Newtonville, Waban, Oak Hill and Upper Falls in the weeks ahead.

    The cast hit the ground running at last night’s opening night performance at Gregorian Rugs. Great show, four fine actors, and Gregorians is one of the best venues.

    Come on down for tonight’s show at Gregorians, tickets are still available. You won’t be disappointed.

    Newton is privileged to have a new theatre company with incredible talent producing unusual plays in even more unusual venues.

    Called the Newton Nomadic Theater, the company presents its offerings at various creative spaces ranging from Johnson’s String Instruments/ Carriage House Violins in Newton Upper Falls to Gregorian’s Rugs in Newton Lower Falls to the Auburndale Community Library (in Auburndale, naturally) and the Waban Library Center (where else?) in Waban! They even perform in private houses and Community Farm barns.

    Although they are “bare bones” productions, without Broadway techno-glitz, they offer some of the best acting to rival the New York stage! Their current production, “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” an Irish black comedy, opened last weekend at Gregorian’s and will move to the Auburndale Community Library for its May 23 and 24 productions.

    This wicked tale of child abuse and filial impiety will have you giggling and cheering for the underdog, if you can figure out who that is!

    Linda Goetz (of Upper Falls) enchants as her character moves from frumpy to sultry to blissfully and disarmingly psychotic in a dance that reminds one of Norman Bates.

    Her lover, Pato Dooley, played by Dave Rich, is a most convincing and equal Romeo to her Juliet, and their star-mother-brother-crossed romance.

    Mother is Lida McGirr, a very talented and valuable newbie to Nomadic Productions; and Pato’s brother, Ray Dooley, played by Matt Phillips, is most convincing as a self-absorbed dolt.

    @Jerry: It was truly, most literally, my pleasure! Kudos to the Newton Nomadic Theater for the insight to pick Faith Healer, Turn of the Screw and now Beauty Queen of Leenane as the first three vehicles for their wandering theatrical productions! And heaps more kudos for assembling a cast of actors and actresses who can speak to the audience with the eloquence the playwrights deserve. I can’t wait to see what’s next!

    It’s called Compass Rose by Ronan Noone. It won’t be until September and the director has some REALLY interesting ideas on how it will be staged. We’re doing auditions at the moment.
