I know so many people have so many good memories about this store (once known as Debbie’s Petland), including Harley the Parrot who spent eight of the store’s 19 years in its front window.
The correct date, according to an email just sent out by Nancy Hyde, is September 3rd, TOMORROW.
Keltic Crust Bakery is closing soon and The Met in Chestnut Hill is closed now as is the Sonia Paine Antique Store on Rte 9 and Galinas Hair salon is now closed in Newtonville. On the bright side there seems to be an ice cream store going in next to the Rox Diner in Newtonville and a new dance studio is opening in the old Huntington TV spot on Rte 9. The retail landscape in Newton continues to evolve. You will see more service oriented businesses filling the brick and mortar storefronts and less tangible goods businesses. It is nice that the Mayor is acknowledging the loss of this most beloved Newton business by hosting an open house for them.
Back in the 80’s and 90’s we had a lovable basset hound named Samantha who was with us for 18 years. Debbie’s was her second favorite place just below the old Newton Highlands Branch Library, now Brigham House.
I’m so sorry to see this shop close. There were many days when I would stop and buy some pet food just so I could spend a few minutes with the puppies during their late afternoon romp. Best wishes to the owners and employees, you will be missed.
Best wishes to the Cohen’s! My grown kids sighed a a sad sigh when they heard the news. Visits to Debbie’s/Newtonville Pet was a happy memory from their childhood.
I will be there to say goodbye with Suki, who has had her quarterly grooming done my Lessie for 10 years there! I will miss this place!
Lessie who is the awesome dog groomer at Newtonville Pet will be working at Especially for Pets in Upper Falls now. She is one of the hardest working women that I know and I hope that anyone who goes to her for her dog grooming services tips her at least 20% if not more because she deserves every penny for lifting heavy dogs in and out of bathtubs and enduring testy dogs who nip at her etc.
