The 2nd annual Tour de Newton will be held on Fathers Day, Sunday June 15.
The annual Tour de Newton is a great event for kids, adults, and casual bicyclists. The ride starts simultaneously in all 13 villages. You’ll be riding with your village neighbors and have a trained leader/sweep to guide you. The 20 mile, 13 village fun ride stops at each of Newton’s villages, where you’ll be welcomed with refreshments, a village badge, and an overview of the village by the locals. Ride the whole 20 mile loop, or just a few villages, whichever you like. It’s a great fun way to see and learn about the whole city.
This year, we’ve got a new design for the village badges thanks to graphic designer extraordinaire Heide Werner. If you want to ride, sign up soon because its filling up quickly. If you don’t want to ride we could use your help as a Village Greeter. It’s a fun job, bring a few friends or family and its more fun. Send me an email ([email protected]) if you’re interested
This Sunday’s (June 15) Tour de Newton’s is going to be a big event. New registrations have been closed out at Newton Centre, Newton Corner, Newton Lowe Falls, Newton Highlands, Newtonville and Waban. There are still spots available if you start the ride in any of the other villages.
The only remaining villages still accepting new riders are Thompsonville, Oak Hill, Chestnut Hill and Upper Falls and they will probably also be closed soon.
The only village left with a few open spots for riders is Thompsonville and no doubt they’ll be gone by the end of the afternoon.
If you’re out and about on Sunday morning you’ll be seeing groups of 25 or so Tour de Newton riders all over the city. We’ve got a total of about 575 riders signed up.
Waban and Newtonville are leading the pack with about 80 registered riders in each of those villages – they’ll be broken up into three separate groups, each with their own leaders/sweeps. The weather so far is looking good so it looks to be a great event this year.
If you’re not riding please consider joining your village’s crew of Tour de Newton greeters. It’s a fun job and the more greeters we have in each village, the more fun every one has. Every 5 or 10 minutes a new group of riders arrive, you make lots of hoopla, welcome them to your villages, hand out goodies, and tell them a bit about the wonders and pleasures of fill-in-the-blank-village.
Send me an email ([email protected]) if you might be willing to be a village greeter for some or all of the morning. We’re particularly looking for some additional greeters in Newton Centre and Auburndale but we’d welcome more people in all villages.
