The Newton Conservators are running a series of guided spring walks in park land around the city.
This weekend I’ll be leading two of them and you’re all invited to come.
Upper Falls Greenway – On Saturday at 10AM we’ll be meeting at The Depot Coffee Shop at the corner of Oak and Chestnut Streets. We’ll be taking a 3 mile tour of Newton’s soon-to-be newest park land as well as walk the possible future connections to Christina St and the Charles River Pathway. The Greenway project is scheduled to be completed in June, in the meantime though we’ll tell you about all the plans of what’s coming.
Riverside Pathway – On Sunday at 1 PM we’ll be meeting at the Lasell Boat House at the end of Charles St in Auburndale. We’ll walk the route of a proposed future path from Auburndale, to Riverside, to Lower Falls along the banks of the Charles River, then over Rt 128. It’s a 1 1/2 mile round trip over some slightly rough trails with one short but steep hill.
Village14 posts about walking and cycling rock!!!
Jerry, not sure if it’s unique to my browser, but the link in your article to upperfallsgreenway.org takes me to a Godaddy page, whereas http://www.upperfallsgreenway.org is working fine.
Just in case it might be of any help, here’s the fix – http://www.bybe.net/blog/12-easy-steps-on-setting-up-a-non-www-to-www-redirect-using-godaddy.html
@Michael – I added a few bike and walking “related posts” above for your reading pleasure. Rock on!
@Jerry – Yes, I’ve been reading them! I’m particularly intrigued by the pedestrian tunnel on the Riverside pathway – I wish there were more of those, for instance under 128 to Needham. In Germany they’re all along the autobahn, whereas in America bipeds seem to be on their own when trying to get across the great dividing lines created by the Eisenhower Interstate System.
@Michael – Oops, thanks, fixed
I’d like to officially retract my previous post that Village14-ers seemed to be more concerned about parking lots and traffic light synchronicity on Route 9.
😉
About 20 people came to yesterday’s Newton Conservator’s Upper Falls Greenway walk. At the start I told them that we’ve been talking to a local craftsman (Hammersmith Studios) about creating a metal sculpture for the Greenway. He’s thinking about creating something connected to the railroad history.
So I told the walkers to keep their eyes open for spikes and any other railroad metal parts that might be useful to the sculptor. Iron Horse, the Greenway contractor, already collected/removed the spikes when they pulled the rails up. Since then neighbors have been collecting the ones that were left behind. Even though people have been looking for them recently we expected that this crew might still find a couple.
By the end of the walk they had collected a mountain of metal, I’d guess 70 -80 pounds worth. I guess I hadn’t counted on the keen eyes, and obsessive personalities of 12 year old boys.
Sorry I couldn’t make either walk. I really wanted to. Jerry. You have reopened things in Newton that I had almost totally forgot about. Thanks.
Just back from the Riverside Pathway one. Really nice walk, in a hidden corner of Newton. I did some Tout mini-videos which you can see on Twitter.com/JuliaMalakie.
Plenty of garlic mustard to pull, for anyone feeling public spirited with some time on their hands.
