In the last few days, local author Nelson Lipshutz stopped by Barnes and Noble to ask about them carrying his new novel The Mecca Plan. They told him that they’re planning on shutting down their Chestnut Hill book store by the end of the year.
Barnes and Noble book store closing

Can’t be surprised when a book store closes these days but what a shame that they’re leaving just as everything else in that corridor is opening.
It’s not surprising when you think about how much harder it is to get to Barnes & Noble these days. With the new traffic lights on Parker and Hammond Pond Road, it’s faster, cheaper and less frustrating to just order from Amazon.com.
I wouldn’t be surprised if their business plummeted while all the construction was going on. I certainly thought twice about stopping in there (especially with our great independent book stores in Newton).
I wonder if they’ll open up across the street?
They won’t be opening up across the street. Unfortunately for my son, who has been working at B&N for two years. No parachutes for booksellers.
IMHO, another case of “gentrification” except for retail. I am betting the rent for B&N’s new lease in 2014 increased dramatically, considering all the new stores and upscale shopping areas opening around that location.
