This Sunday’s Tour de Newton is officially a sell-out. The Tour is a 20 mile, 13 village, free fun bike ride. It will start simultaneously in all 13 villages at 9:30 on Sunday morning. As the 13 groups ride around the city, they’ll stop in each village, collect a badge and hear a bit about the village.
When planning the event, we were expecting 150-200 riders but hoping for maybe 300. Registration was just closed down earlier this morning with a total of 411 riders registered. We’re particularly happy that more than a third of the registered riders are kids. It’s not just “the bike people” who’ll be riding, it’s everyone.
So if you’re out and about on Sunday morning, stop by your village center and welcome and cheer on the visitors from around the city. The groups from other villages will be arriving every 10-15 minutes from 9:30 – 1 PM.
For info about where the stop is in your village, take a look at the Tour de Newton map and click on your village.
Wow! Jerry, you and your team are a tour de force!
Thanks, but I won’t claim credit for the work but I will for the idea for the event. The real engine behind the whole event is the indefatigable Alicia Bowman with lots of help from lots of people. There’s about 65-70 volunteers putting it all together – including quite a few familiar names from Village14.
I’ll see you in West Newton tomorrow. Us Upper Falls riders are due there around 11:30
Jerry is a TOUR DE FORCE! Viva la JERRY!
I am committing to sponsoring a village table for next year! (Newton Corner!)
Kara, I’ve got the stuff. It’s a heavy box! Jerry’s organization is amazing. I’ll see everyone in West Newton tomorrow.
Weather.com forecast for Newton:

Looks like we’ve got a nice break in the weather!
From the bike newton website: 8:30am: We are sorry to say that Tour de Newton has been cancelled today, due to the unexpected heavy rains. Though it is possible rains will let up, it is very hard to say whether another band of very heavy rain now in Southern Connecticut will come through Newton this morning. It looks like rescheduling for next weekend is a good possibility. Please check back here for updates.
Officially the event was postponed but unofficially it sounds like a small number of people did ride the route this morning from various villages. I rode it with one of the Upper Falls greeters. We crossed paths with riders from the Highlands, Waban, and the Highland riders saw Oak Hill riders. Meanwhile across town my wife reported that a group of about ten Nonantum riders came through the Newtonville stop.
Here’s a few photos from around town.
