The Newton Tab reported on this Saturday’s annual “community swim event” in the Charles River at the Esplanade. While swimming is generally prohibited in the Charles, it is allowed for these special annual events. By all accounts, the water in the Charles River Basin is perfectly safe these days for swimming.
How about a Newton “Swim in the Charles” day? I’d guess that the upstream water is even cleaner. If you could have a sanctioned “swim in the river” event in Newton, what spot would you pick?. I guess for most of the Newton stretch of the river it would probably be a “wade in the river” event since it’s mostly quite shallow.
No wading. It says in the article that the silt has heavy metals from the industrial times, so swimming is only allowed in places where it’s too deep to touch the bottom.
I believe that only applies to the basin. In lots of places in newton there’s no silt at all.
