Lally column, invented by Waltham resident John Lally, whose descendant I once met in Allston. The Lallys (structural and otherwise) are alive and well in this area.
How cool is that? Mr Lally is right up there in the whos-who of column people, along with Mr. Doric and Mr. Corinthian – though I don’t believe that they were from Waltham.
Great story Jerry!
Think the first floor could handle the weight of all of Village 14?
Bloggers night out at Jerry’s!
That shouldn’t be a problem Terry. We bloggers are all 3/4 hot air.
Jerry. Great Story. Our house was built in 1933 and it is almost entirely framed with steel beam rafters and cast iron steel. I stripped all our old wallpaper from the walls 20 years back and there was only one small crack on any of the walls, that one over one of the doors. I don’t think they still use steel beams in houses, but I might be wrong.
