Starting next Sunday April 7th, the Mass Dept of Transportation will begin repaving Highland Ave in Needham and Needham St in Newton. They’re planning on starting in Needham and working their way to Newton.  Most of the work will occur at night between 9PM – 5AM but some minor work will occur during off-peak day time hours. The whole project should take two to three weeks. More details here
It’s beyond stupid to completely resurface that road without burying the utilities first.
or to bury the utilities, then reconstruct the road in 5-10 years.
or have terrible roads while we forever try to figure out if we can bury the utilities or not
What @Greg Reibman said. Needham St. is in such shoddy shape it’s practically undrivable. It *is* stupid not to underground the utilities now when they have the chance. But it’d be worse to hold up the project any longer because it’s not undergrounding the utilities.
At least the state should install underground conduit now, before repaving, so that utility cables can be drawn through the conduits at some later date.
About time. Still don’t understand why they repaved Rt 9 and re-did the sidewalks (neither of which were in ANY need of help) yet left this road untouched.
@Sean– There’s no understanding Mass. DOT. Remember when they bought the Pillar House for $11M? What’s that old saying… “There’s no fixing stupid.”
