There was quite a bit of discussion on Village 14 about the Academy Awards on one of our overrides threads Sunday. But did you know that although actress Meg Ryan has never won an Oscar she already knows how she’s voting on March 12?
Meg Ryan on Newton’s overrides

I’ll have what she’s having.
The first R-rated override in MA history.
@Steve: Are you suggesting that Meg is excited about something other than repaired sidewalks, moving the wires division and giving the children of Waban a cafeteria?
Wasn’t she having dinner with Steve?
Although Meg’s ACTINGout her yes groans and it cost her nothing to do so.
But it will really cost each of us and average of $343 per year for the next several decades, if the override passes.
Tell the administration that it needs to tighten up its finances before any of us send them any more of our hard earned money.
And they can start by getting the teacher’s union to pay the salary of the union president.
Do you know that the union president is paid by the city and not the union??
Fix that and many other spending leakages and then come back to us for more money.
Thank you for proving once and for all this is truly the ‘Village Idiot’s’ blog.
As a frequent participant, I’m surprised to hear that you needed proof! But you’re welcome.
Norman Wirtz said “And they can start by getting the teacher’s union to pay the salary of the union president. Do you know that the union president is paid by the city and not the union??”
The NTA President is elected from the ranks of working Newton teachers. Should the president wish to serve their union office full-time (this is the norm in Newton) they can request a leave of absence from their teaching duties, during which time their salary, benefits and seniority continue to accrue as they would if the president were still in the classroom. The expectation is that this is a temporary assignment and that the president will return to the teaching ranks after serving. If the president is granted this leave of absence, they are replaced in the classroom and the salary (up to a Master’s Lane 4) and benefits of the replacement teacher are reimbursed in full to Newton.
This video is an example of the mentality of those who would support the over-ride. Do we know who actually put this thing together? And is this supposed to be a moral example for the kids who may see this whose futures are dependent upon the over-rides? The reality is that it’s pretty good acting, but it’s pretty vocally obscene. Is someone proud of creating this? A joke is a joke, but this seems misplaced.
By the way, Norman Wirtz is correct, and I believe it’s more than $343. Add this to the normal 2 1/2 % increase. Setti is an old-fashioned pol in the true Massachusetts Democrat tradition. Take ….take ….take ….tax …..tax ….tax
That zero-based budgeting has done wonders for the city.
When I saw this post today, a one-year-old was asleep on my lap (best part of my month!) and I didn’t want to play the video for fear of waking her. So, I spent two hours trying to figure out what it could possibly contain.
And, I must say, it was worth the wait.
Why, Gail, was it “worth the wait”? What did you like about it?
@Barry: It made me laugh aloud.
@Barry: I’m not sure how you are sure that this was made by an override supporter, since, when I watch it, I’m not sure. But I am sure that you might want to go see a movie once in a while.
Greg, I saw the movie. It’s an inappropriate use of sexual imagery, something an adolescent boy would get a kick out of, and vocally pretty graphic, I think you’ll agree. I don’t know if an over-ride supporter did it, so that’s why I asked, but got no answer.
So, what about it made you laugh so hard, Gail? You’re being evasive.
Guess I still have some adolescent boy in me because I roared.
I found it funny the same way I find lots of things funny about Newton elections and Newton politics.
Just watched it again. Still funny.
My wife and I were both roaring with laughter when we saw it. There’s definitely some adolescent boy in both of us I guess.
As to why? Explaining why any instance of humor is funny is a fool’s errand. This fool says it’s got to with outrageous and unexpected juxtaposition of two things, coupled with memories of the original movie scene and how funny that was.
Fellow adolescent boy here: I thought it was hilarious.
@Barry: It didn’t make me laugh so hard, it made me laugh aloud, like I wrote. However, the first time I saw the movie, that Meg Ryan scene made me laugh really hard. I still think “I’ll have what she’s having” is one of the funniest lines ever delivered in a movie.
Please don’t ask me to explain why this scene is funny.
Gail, I didn’t think you meant the scene in the movie. That was funny. I meant the use of it in a stupid political ad, which tells you nothing about the issues. If you meant a recollection of the movie, then it’s different.
@Barry. My final comment on your comments. Two points:
1. Jerry was correct when he wrote “Explaining why any instance of humor is funny is a fool’s errand.”
2. I’m pretty confident that this was not a “political ad” created, sanctioned, funded or endorsed by any ballot initiative committee, elected person(s) or Hollywood star. It’s a independent video.
I think of it as post-adolescent girl humor, myself. Much funnier for women, IMNSHO.
Greg,
Thanks for the link to the movie. But it made me wonder: What makes you think you know how Meg Ryan will vote on March 12?
Greg, my final comment (unless yours was really not final)
(1) humor needs no explanation, true. But there’s humor that’s creative, and humor that relies upon nothing more than adolescent references to sexual organs, defecation, passing gas, etc. No explanation needed, but it indicates the mentality of the people who enjoy it. Its place in the movie was different than its use in that video.
(2) I think it’s irresponsible to post the video if you don’t even know its origin. Then it has no meaning. Having done that puts you in the category of the kid who gets a kick out of jokes about passing gas, if you think a panting, orgasmic woman getting off on how to vote on an over-ride in Newton is funny.
I think you’re right Bruce, she may just be faking it.
