What’s the connection between trees, blizzards, and overrides?
Some guy I know answered that question in today’s Newton Patch.

Excellent column – thanks!
Great piece Jerry, I am going to tweet it out, though I wanted to make sure you knew *I* am also in favor of this override, after having been pretty vocally against the last one. (Perhaps you have blocked out the memory of my robo-call & NewTV appearance)
Too bad, the last override did not pass. Angier would have been replaced by now.
…and it would have cost us $150M and resembled a community college only with smaller desks.
The funds from the 2008 override weren’t designated for any particular project. The override proposals went from $23m to $16m in a week’s time, then down to $11m with no rational explanation for how the new revenue would be spent – the override campaign was DOA due to the chaos at City Hall.
The 2002 override was supposed to be spent to maintain programs but was instead was diverted into a fund to build a new NN without the knowledge of the residents. Likewise, the monies raised from the 2008 override could have be spent in whatever way Mayor Cohen so chose. That’s why it lost.
The 2008 campaign was civil and well run on both sides. The Mayor’s actions over many years lost the override in 2008.
What Jane said.
Emily Norton –
No, I’m a newcomer. I wasn’t around here for the last override.
No worries Jerry… even if you had been here you wouldn’t have remembered it 🙂
@Emily. Jerry remembers everything
@Emily: Jerry is also very good at figuring things out!
