How are the streets, sidewalks and trees in your village?

Maple tree down, power out at the Steele household.
I passed the above tree around 11:30 on my way home from work. It’s not a city tree (yay!). It is/was in front of the apartment building on Comm Ave. across from the Newton Marriott. I was only five minutes ahead of a tree crew, so it may be half gone by now. Luckily it split in a way that avoided a utility pole and mostly landed on the grass, although the upper branches were over the sidewalk and into the street a bit. It’s a linden. Hard to tell in the dark, but it looked like another case of multiple trunks, weak union, prone to splitting in storms.
Giant oak came down into the house. Good thing that I wasn’t in my recliner! Picture window, deck, gutters, etc. gone,
We’re very fortunate: It just missed my sleeping daughter’s bedroom!
@Terry, best wishes to you and your family. I am glad to hear that everyone is safe (and that you weren’t in your recliner). Many years ago, an enormous willow tree came down on my grandparents’ house during a hurricane, destroying two bedrooms and the kitchen. Gratefully, everyone was safe, albeit a little bit shaken.
Thank you Ted.
Just last week, Alderman Crossley and I were looking at the old Oaks in the neighborhood and agreed that as much as we love the trees, when they are close to the end of their life cycle, we’re better off taking them down ourselves rather than have them fall, with the damage potential that brings. This particular tree looked youngish and very healthy. It’s hard to know.
I’m playing the lottery today: I just had shoulder surgery and the recliner is my go-to comfort zone -accompanied by a wee dram of Lagavulin for the pain. Very fortunate that I was able to sleep upstairs last night!
So sorry to hear about the tree and damage, Terry. Thankfully no one was hurt. We had a tree come down on our house during Irene….scary stuff. I wish you the best as it gets cleaned up and fixed!
