The JCC sent this to members today…
However, if you do photograph it. Please share.
Call the Blue Ribbon BBQ trailer (2nd Ave) and ask if they serve bear.
Hoss – I’m sure they serve anyone who pays 😉
‘reported near Needham St.’ as now there is finally a mascot for the Greenway.
bearly underway as a project, we may have more than a linear park but also a scenic destination and coming soon the Newton Greenway Zoo.
Cub Reporter — There is now a moose sighting. I’m on the lookout for pink elephants…
I think the question is do they serve bears? Can’t be easy finding home made pickles or sweet potato pie when you’re walking around on all fours trying to avoid TV crews all day.
Oh well, I signed both nomination papers anyway. It was only governors council. They looked friendly enough.
I’m thinking about all the animals I see in Newton that weren’t here when I was a kid.
Here are just some
Bears
Coyotes
Possums
Raccoons
Rabbits
Turkeys
Fishers
Deer
Skunks
Flying Squirrels
White Ibis
Bald Eagle
Starling
Peregrine Falcon
Beaver
On the other hand, there are some populations that I see far less of
Frogs
Toads
Blue Birds
Snakes, particularly garter and Black Snakes
Bob,
What a great observation. I’ve often wondered why there are fewer frogs/toads and snakes. Could it be all landscaping/pesticide related? I would add to your list of things we don’t see:
Fireflies
Praying Mantis
Butterflies
dragonflies/mayflies
Bob, .. and things we do now see – foxes
in our backyard on the northside we have families of woodchucks (or are they groundhogs), coyotees, foxes, fisher cats, possum, and wiley politicians…
When I still lived in Needham, we had lots of snakes, much to the delight of our overly curious (and sadly departed) cat, Sox, who was always looking for a friend. And yes, foxes…which is what brought Sox’s sweet life to an end 🙁
Lots of dragonflies and damselflies, too… but this is/was in the less developed part of town, so I am guessing that some of the critters that felt things were getting too crowded in Newton and the more developed parts of Needham had congregated there.
As for the bear, apparently it’s mating season. Personal dating experience leads me to believe s/he won’t have much luck in this area, but I wish him/her the best 😉
Wendy, the bear may have been looking to hook up at the bar at Jonathan’s.
The bear seems to have decided that the Brookline singles scene was more promising:

Alex Jones got some pretty awesome photos for the TAB. Check ’em out.

Ashley – thanks for the photos! BTW, an updated Globe article indicates that this is not the bear from Newton – it had tags showing it had been previously captured and relocated (not sure how they know the Newton one hadn’t been).
Now we really have (Newton South) Lions and (Newton North) Tigers and Bears. . .
Oh my-
Bob: Good trade. And there are fireflies out on the aqueduct.
@Bill – thanks for that info. I’ve never once seen a firefly here in Newton and I think it is one of the greatest summertime pleasures.
Now they think it IS the same bear, although I will say that there are two different bears on Twitter so who *really* knows?
Ted, if BooBoo is going to get lucky anywhere in my neighborhood, I hear Jonathan’s is the place to go.
@Kim. You are right about the butterflies. Monarchs used to be a dime a dozen here; now I can’t remember the last time I saw one. @Jerry. How could I forget.
