The Upper Falls Greenway bike trail won’t be built until next spring, but since the NewtonSERVES volunteers cleared the entire length of the trail this spring, its now a perfectly walkable mile long trail.
From 10AM – noon today, walk the length of the trail and score a free ice cream. Start at the Depot at the corner of Chestnut and Oak. Walk to the river and you’ll be handed a token. Walk to the opposite end at Easy St (National Lumber) and you’ll get another token. Walk back to the start and turn them in at the Upper Falls Variety Store for the ice cream or slush of your choice.
Come on down. It looks line a fine day for a two mile walk.
I’ve got a bad case of ankle strain, so am out of the lineup. Otherwise, I’d be there. Hope you get a great turnout.
I’m digging up Japanese knotweed with Katherine Howard & hopefully more people in the woods at Hammond Pond Parkway by the Chestnut Hill Sopping Center parking lot (western end). Otherwise I’d be there. We’re working til noon, so anyone. Who wants to help, come on over! Wear long pants (in case of ticks), bring shovel or pitchfork!
Jerry say: ‘The Upper Falls Greenway bike trail won’t be built until next spring’
are you sure Jerry that it will be built? or are you just speculating that it might be built possibly as soon as next spring??
The city’s Greenway Working Group has been meeting every two weeks in recent months putting together the plans. The group consists of city staff (Parks&Rec, DPW, Planning, Executive, Legal depts.), aldermen, area councilors, and various other interested parties.
The Board of Directors of the MBTA is scheduled to vote at their July meeting to allow the lease to go forward and all reports are that should be straightforward. The Working Group has put together a schedule that’s will get it built next spring … though of course there are still a number of unknowable variables that could push that out a bit. For example, until the lease and all other permitting (e.g. ConCom) is completed, the project won’t be added to Iron Horse Preservation’s construction schedule.
So to your question “Are you sure that it will be built?” I’d say I’m fairly certain barring any surprise the MBTA, which sounds very unlikely.
To the question “Are you sure that it will be built next spring?, I’d say that’s what we’re all shooting for but like in virtually any project there are any number of factors that could potentially stretch that schedule out a bit.
thanx Jerry for the clarification. As one who resides on the northside (not a resident of Upper Falls) and enjoys biking the riverside trails, I look forward to an enhanced trail network thuout the city. I applaud your efforts and hope that the executive office has a clear understanding of the political priorities and potential fallout.
