I was sitting in the kitchen this morning when my wife exploded with convulsive laughing in the next room.
From today’s Newton Tab Crime Watch:
Are you just happy to see me?
Police arrested Riad Ouansa, 43 of 25 Madison St Revere, on March 1 and charged him with larceny over $250 after he allegedly tried to steal a crystal candle-holder from Bloomingdales by concealing it in his pants.
This blog needs a “like” button – love this headline
We use “recommend” instead of “like” but it’s the essentially the same thing.
That might be the only funny crime headline I’ve ever written myself! The rest of them have always been crafted by my reporters.
No wonder you’re leaving, you’ve now done it all.
A normal guy just uses socks.
Hate to rain on the parade here but I found the headline to be very offensive.
Please remember that the headline might seem funny to you but I imagine the victims of crimes are not so amused.
This is not the first time the TAB has used “comical” headlines for the crime report and in the past I have written to the Editor to voice my dislike for this tactic. And before you all accuse me of lacking a sense of humor, be assured I can and do laugh easily and often. I just don’t laugh at crime. The TAB is not a tabloid. Don’t act like one of you want to be treated seriously. Sorry but not amused by this.
Greg – recommend requires that you let the blog access your FB page. “Like” just means showing here that it’s liked. Not saying you need to change things, just pointing out that they are different. Plus, there are things I like but don’t necessarily feel like recommending to others. Sorry to be pedantic.
@TheWholeTruth – sorry it didn’t tickle you too. It wasn’t just a funny headline above a crime report though. It was a funny headline above a very funny crime report – someone trying to stuff a chandelier in their pants in Bloomingdales. Even with out that headline, that would still be one funny crime story … at least in my house.
As is quite often the case, I’m with TWT. If you’ve had someone close to you or a friend on the crime log, you’d know the headlines aren’t one bit funny. The headline writers think the people in their families or friends will never be found on the crime log. Good luck to ya as you make it through adolescence and early adulthood.
Hate to get all religious on you, but there’s something called the Golden Rule that serves people well in life. Editors and publishers are not not provided an exemption, though they don’t seem to get that.
Gail, I’m impressed. I figured letting someone write this headline was a parting gift from you!
This is unprofessional.
@Jerry,
Would it still be funny if it was being stolen from your house?
I get the humor factor I just don’t think the TAB should be making fun of crime, no matter how bizarre it appears.
We all could have laughed at the report without the need for the the suggestive and inappropriate headline.
It’s cheap, trashy and unprofessional. IMHO.
