Mayor Warren’s community forum on Thursday at the Newton War Memorial to addresses issues of prejudice and discrimination was uncomfortable, troubling, sometimes inspiring, sometimes infuriating, not as well organized as it might have been, embarrassing, ugly and clearly necessary. But was it helpful?
Here’s how the Globe’s Ellen Ishkanian described the scene…
At points it devolved into a forum where Jewish activists heckled an African-American woman who spoke of her son being called a vulgar racist slur at school, where the superintendent of schools was booed and needed a police escort to his car, and where a woman held a sign reading: “It’s not prejudice, it’s anti-Semitism.”
If you were there, I hope you will weigh in. If you missed it you can watch it below. I will share some of my thoughts later as well.
Here’s coverage from Channel 7.

I watched the live stream. The behaviour of many in the organized “activist” group was appalling. Talk about a lack of peace and tolerance. But the students who spoke give me hope.

The NN and NSHS students were the highlight of the evening. They spoke beautifully and made me proud to be a Newton resident and a NN teacher.
The worst moment was when the mother spoke of her African American son being called the N word and was heckled. She left the meeting close to tears. I was proud and pleased to see NN Principal Mark Aronson leave the meeting to spend time speaking with her. I can only hope it made a difference for her.
The very significant number of hecklers did not do anything to advance their cause. Their rude behavior undermined any point they planned to make, in part because this was clearly an organized demonstration. The superintendent had to be escorted to his car and the Mayor was surrounded by police protection as he conducted a discussion. This was the most appalling example of outrageously rude, uncivil behavior I’ve seen since the late 60’s. After the meeting ended, I approached many friends who were upset and embarrassed by the hecklers. As I left, Councilor Yates and I had a conversation about the many times “our” group (Irish Americans) had publicly embarrassed us. It feels really awful to be placed in that situation.
The meeting was necessary, the lack of civility should be unacceptable, the students and a number of speakers were inspiring. To talk about how the meeting was organized is silly. We have bigger fish to fry.
I regret writing above that the forum was not well organized. It wasn’t. And that’s not what I meant. I should have said it didn’t unfold the way it should have, or in the way I’m sure the mayor and his team hoped. Instead of creating a safe place for a difficult conversations, an outside group of agitators intimated others from speaking or asking questions.

To me the basketball incident is different than the grafitti. The grafitti was premeditated and spiteful, but the basketball name calling was due to competition. It was despicable, but to me I understood where it was coming from….one team trying to rattle the other in the name of competition. I fear for this city. I never thought I’d see this day.
I will watch the live feed over the weekend when I have a chance.

The fact that our students were NOT intimidated from speaking, and spoke so eloquently, is a true credit to them, their families, their teachers, and this community.

I am so embarrassed by the audience members that only wanted to talk about their issues and how awful speakers were treated that were sharing stories. I had wanted to attend this meeting, but other family obligations were more important. We can’t solve the problem if people with their own agendas speak over people and call other people names. I am so mad! Victims of hate were speaking, and no one group is more or less important than another. Josh Sims Speyer and his family should be very proud of him. I want the community to know that his quote really moved me – But when we say one type of hate speech is worse than another, we build walls in our community. My family and I discussed this over breakfast, and for a student to get up and speak after Mr. Jacobs spoke deserves credit, and his poise! He speaks what my family believes. There is NO place for hate in our community, and that is any kind of hate. I look forward to find out what we are doing as a community, but I am so embarrassed at how of my community members behaved. And for that I want to say that I am sorry to the community and Mr. Jacobs does not speak for me.

I’m late to this conversation (as usual) and still digesting it- but so far I am shocked and embarrassed by what happened. I’ll watch the stream when I can.

What intrigued me most from the Globe story were the signs held in the picture:
“What are Newton Schools hiding?”
” Biased education causes hate”
Makes me wonder where the disruptors were coming from.
I attempted to have a conversation with the fellow who seemed to be organizing those sign holders last night. Here’s how it went:
Me: Hi, where do you live?
Protester: Newton.
Me: Which village do you live in?
Protester: Why does it matter?
Me: I’m not asking for your address. But most people who live in Newton are comfortable saying which village they live in.
Protester: I’m not.
Me: OK, can you tell me the names of any four villages in Newton?
Protester: F–k off. (and then he walked away.)

Watching the stream, remembering the old threads, wondering no longer. It was a good old fashioned hijacking by the “Peace & Tolerance” group. Got it.
@Doug: Exactly. And that’s former Newton resident Brian Camenker on the left in the photo I just added.

While the conduct of a few audience members was deeply disrespectful and harmed rather than helped their cause, the real story of the evening is that Newton — a haven of progressivism and tolerance — is home to active anti-semitism, racism, homophobia and their ilk. The appearance of anti-semitic graffiti only lifted the lid on multiple strands of intolerance and discrimination that cannot go unanswered. Those of us who chose this community in part for its culture of acceptance, and who educate our children here, heard unequivocally that there is still work to be done.
Let’s not let the poor behavior of a few, or the divisive angle of a news report, derail us from proactively and courageously addressing hatred and discrimination by any name. The students spoke insightfully and give us hope that Newton can do better. We must do better. If not here, then where?

I was also impressed by the students. They were among the folks who understood the purpose of the forum. They were respectful, thoughtful, and in my opinion (as parent of a high schooler) a much better indicator of the young adults our schools are producing than the hateful incidents that made the meeting necessary.

I was not present at the event, but I have witnessed Dr. Jacobs behavior at other public meetings. The media coverage gives him far too much legitimacy. He uses a McCarthy-like approach to defend the state of Israel. His tactics are reprehensible and his accusations about NPS curriculum have been aired and dismissed repeatedly. And while I share Greg’s hope that many of his “activists” aren’t even from Newton, I’m concerned that the media coverage suggests that he is somehow representative of our community. I resent that this event will give him the publicity he seeks, but like the mishandled anti-semitism at Day, we need to recognize the need to speak out against such intolerance. Ignoring it doesn’t seem to have worked. As a Jew and a Zionist, as someone who strongly objects to any display of anti-semitism or bigotry, I reject Dr. Jacobs and his “peace and tolerance” group.

From what I’ve read so far, I’m embarrassed to live in Newton. If the hecklers really were outside agitators, I hope there’s some way to get that info to the press.
Like Adam, I’m Jewish and while I’ve been appalled by this year’s antisemitism and its gross mishandling at Day, that doesn’t excuse any of the behavior reported. I grew up with parents active in the Civil Rights movement and will not argue that one form of bigotry is worse than another. Dr. Jacobs and his crowd do not represent me nor my Jewish friends in or out of Newton.
Wicked Local has published these photos from last night’s event.

I agree completely with Adam and mgwa. I likewise am a Jew and a Zionist, and am disappointed in the manner in which the incidents of anti-Semitism have been handled in our schools. However, Charles Jacobs does not speak for me. His witch hunt against the Newton schools is misguided at best, injurious to the Jews of Newton at worst. Last night’s antics did nothing to improve the climate of hate that is invading this City. Shame on him and his followers, wherever they came in from.

I’m Jewish as well, but don’t have kids so I don’t know whats going on there. I know that i am concerned about this whole thing.
I wouldn’t be so fast to dismiss Charles Jacobs’ points. Assuming the kids are writing the graffiti, they are learning hate from somewhere. They can be learning it from peers, parents or even in the text books. I don’t think it’s in the text books, I think he is wrong, but what is the harm in allowing Charles to go through the books or whatever he is fighting for. I don’t understand the secrecy…help him look for what he is looking for and when he has nothing he and his friends will be off on another issue. While the schools don’t allow him to review things he can always say…look, they are hiding books from us.
My favorite speaker (I think his name was Josh) he was the Jr who reported the first incident….he’s going to make a terrific lawyer/politician one day. All the kids were wonderful.
It’s time for a stricter policy on hate.
The other thing that struck me was when the agent couldn’t find enough info to merit a federal prosecution (on hate crime, I guess). what about a local investigation based on defacing public property or any of a dozen other charges that could be brought up…it’s time for proactive local investigation. They even admitted that up until now. no one was taking these incidents (and others) seriously.
We used to have “no place for hate” program that was sponsored by the ADL and there were less incidents during those years.
My suggestions regarding the grafiti is that we should place flood lights around the schools so the authors of the grafiti wont have opportunities to mark their brand of hate. I may even go further, but no one wants security cameras around the schools, so I would have no problem with flood lights…but something has to happen. Nothing is not an option. This is gone way too long.

What people don’t understand that the purpose of this meeting was specifically for the anti Semitism that is happening in the town. Why don’t people understand this? No one should be discriminated against, no one should be called names but swatsikas and burn the Jews is something this town should not tolerate. The whole evening the subject of anti Semitism was diverted. It’s a problem Newton. Own up to it already and figure out where it’s coming from not just who did it!

Just watched a video. Nobody heckled black woman. Someone interrupted her (not sure who it was, but it was 1 person), but most people immediately said “let her talk” and she continued. This meeting was specifically organized because of anti-semitic incidents so people wanted to focus on that. Nobody was saying that racism or other prejudice is OK. Please don’t lie, the entire boston globe article is a bunch of lies.

Although I wasn’t there, I find the propensity to tar and feather the disruptive fraught with its own issues. Frankly, I’m a bit embarrassed by those who are embarrassed by last night’s event. The comments here don’t address the issue of whether or not the grievances are legitimate but react to the manner in which the grievance was delivered. @Doug offered a TAB story that might fill in some of the back story, but that is clearly not the whole picture. In a similar vein, the BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction against Israel) movement has its share of problems and the debate of whether or not BDS has deep anti-Semitic roots is on-going (http://www.wsj.com/articles/march-madness-the-anti-semite-bracket-1458772097 and responses to that article at http://www.wsj.com/articles/many-see-the-bds-movement-as-anti-semitic-1459973355).
If we are looking for polite, I’m sure the same people who are upset at the tone of last night’s meeting would applaud raucous disruption for causes they find appropriate. Which brings me to Bill Clinton. What do people think of the protesters who heckled Bill Clinton a couple of days ago? Are you embarrassed by them? If not, why not. If yes, why so. What do you think of Bill Clinton’s reaction? Justified or not?
A final consideration for how to deal with issues we find uncomfortable (from Tablet Magazine) framed in a Passover setting:

@Lynn: With all due respect you were not there so you are not aware of how ugly and inappropriate it was. And no, I don’t think anyone would or should applaud booing or hissing or disrupting the superintendent, a former US President, Donald Trump, the fellow down the street or anyone else when they have the microphone.
@Mom_from_Newton: If you are under the impression from watching the video that it was only one person who was heckling, then it must be that the video does not capture all that happened.
More importantly you write:
That’s actually not true. The meeting was promoted as a discussion about all discrimination. Now you can argue that you wished or believed the meeting should have been to “specifically” address anti-semitism. But it wasn’t.

Tom- The students you viewed on the video are examples of Newton students – in my experience, these students are very typical in their attitude and their behavior. Kids aren’t perfect; the adults aren’t perfect; the community isn’t perfect.
For Charles Jacobs to continue to use the Newton schools for his own purposes has gone on way too long. The issue has nothing to do with text books. If it wasn’t text books, it would be something else in Newton. He’s been doing this at School Committee meetings for years.

Newton Mom – can you cite a source for your assertion that this event “was specifically for the anti Semitism that is happening in the town”? That’s not how it was described on the city website or in the Mayor’s email.

I was at the meeting last night and in the back where the large group of protesters were. What I observed was a level of hate and disruption that went against making Newton a welcoming place for all. There was a women who gave the superintendent the finger for a good 30 seconds. Very mature. They booed him before he even had a chance to speak. And most of them both loudly and among themselves dismissed anyone’s comments that weren’t about antisemitism as the only issue we should be addressing. As the teacher spoke about coming out as gay in 1991, some of the crowd was rude with the man near me saying being gay is nothing, being Jewish is really hard. Clearly they aren’t paying attention to national politics. The comments from the student from the black students organization were heartbreaking. The other students that spoke at the end were right. There are lots of hurtful, discriminating comments and actions every day and not enough is being done about them. And if you can’t recognize that we have to work together to address all discrimination, you are part of the problem.

How come there are two of us posting under Newton Mom??????

Greg Reibman –
1) I spoke to several people who were at the meeting. All confirmed that someone interrupted the black woman, but most said to let her talk. I don’t agree that interrupting was the right thing at all, but on the video I see it is 1 person, and this is what I heard as well. Noone heckled her. Now, we also have no idea who interrupted her. The Boston Globe says “Jewish activists.. ” heckled black woman which is totally disgusting and anti-semitic way of putting it. Sorry to say.
2) It appears that there was 2 emails going around. The one that I got said that meeting was organized to discuss anti-semitism in Newton schools. It looks like pretty much everyone I know who went to the meeting got that email. Only now I’m realizing (and others too) that the official email from Newton said that it was meeting about all kinds of issues, and nothing there was even written about anti semitism. Unfortunately that seemed to be a major misunderstanding, as different people went to “2 different meetings”. That is very unfortunate.

Mom_from_Newton – it sounds like the email you received was being circulated by someone with a particular agenda. That’s unfortunate. And an example of why information should be carefully examined for bias, as our kids are taught in school. But even while listening to the live-stream last night, I could hear the whispered (and not so whispered) comments of several people while both the mom was speaking and while the teacher was speaking. I heard more while another man was speaking. It was ridiculous.

For those of you who are trying to make excuses for the rude, disrespectful action of the group that turned the meeting into an embarrassment to the city, shame on you. I was shocked that a former candidate for the City Council who was not at the meeting would support the actions of the closed minded people who refused to even consider the views and opinions of others.

They were not appreciative of the black mother trying to make her way up to speak and while they might not have spoken loudly enough to totally drown her out, they were murmuring their dislike. And they did make some comments to her while she was speaking about what happened to her son being not as hurtful as some of the antisemitic instances. I did stop to shake her had and thank her for speaking up. As they did the entire time the teacher was speaking about his struggles being gay and even when the city ADA coordinator spoke about people with disabilities.

Jane,
I think you’re missing my point. Give Charles everything he wants. Let him review everything, give him access to an intern to help him. If/When he comes up empty he’ll move on. You keep denying him access he’ll stay here, just like you stated (he’d been doing this for years). Give him what he requests, when he says there’s nothing there he’ll move on. Now, maybe you’re right in that he’ll move on to another issue in Newton…but maybe he wont.
Sometimes people can read the samething and have different interpretations, allow him access. It only takes one person to misread or misunderstand comments that can cause this.

tomsheff – Charles Jacob already uncovered a lot of stuff in the curriculum, there’s a video that shows it in detail, have you seen it?

I have heard some of these people speak at SC before. There maybe only two ways to satisfy them. Teach about the middle east only from the perspective of Israel and that Israel is 100% right at all times. Or stop teaching about the middle east at all.

Mom-from-Newton,
There was one official email thoat outlined the purpose of this meeting. If another group sent out another email, then they need to accept responsibility for misrepresenting the meeting.
Perhaps you can tell us what group sent out the email saying that this meeting was to discuss anti-Semitism.
I was standing about 10 feet from the mom who was heckled, and she was interrupted and heckled. It was awful and probably the most upsetting moment of the meeting.

Alicia G Bowman – video is here:

Jane Frantz – the email I got was from “Americans for Peace and Tolerance”.
I am sure that 99% of people who came to discuss anti semitism came based on that email as it was widely forwarded. Only after the meeting (today), I (and others) have realized that the official Newton memo about the meeting is totally different.

Did the email go to just Newton residents or was it sent to members who are not residents? Can you explain why this organization would send an email with erroneous information?

The group that sent the email is the group headed by Charles Jacobs and, it is clear, led the protests last night:
http://www.peaceandtolerance.org/.
So- definitely not an official city announcement of the event but rather an email framing it the way they wanted to.

Jane Frantz – I believe the email went only to those on their email list. I’m actually not on their list, it was forwarded to me by a friend.
As to why they sent it – I honestly have no idea, that’s what I’m trying to find out myself. I think the Mayor scheduled the meeting because of the several recent anti-Semitic incidents, and they thought the discussion will be about that, so they sent out that email, not seeing the official Newton email? Honestly I have no idea. I myself feel very frustrated by that.

Lynne, it’s a bit presumptuous of you to know what I find appropriate. I’ll try to be more clear: APT’s grievances over curriculum are not legitimate, and my complaints over the group’s public display go far beyond manners. They are clearly the ones doing the tarring and feathering for some time now, but they are also delivering a message tainted with hatred and intolerance.
BDS is abhorrent and anti-semitic, and APT is doing a disservice to those fighting BDS or delegitimization of Israel.

Anyone confused by the meeting topic should have had their eyes opened by the Mayor’s speech about why this meeting was called and then there was a panel of people who spoke first. Each of them shared a little of their background and experience with discrimination. Only the antisemitic instances have gotten airplay. Listen to the students and what they had to say about what they face every day. There is more than anti-semitism issues. There are racism slurs, gay bashing, anti-women statements…

Mom-from-Newton,
You can sign up for official emails on the city website. That’s the way you get accurate information about city events. You can also find accurate information about events on the city. website.

The protesters at this meeting were rude and disruptive and acting like children demanding to have all of the attention. It is sad that these adults have no respect for others who have been insulted, degraded and intimidated, who need to look over their shoulders. It is heartbreaking that any of us feel threatened just by being who we are. The article in the Denebola is an excellent representation of both the meeting and the great attitudes of our young people. Hopefully as the city continues to bring people together attitudes will begin to meld into those that want no one to be treated badly.
This curriculum battle with Newton by those who are sure anti semitism is being taught in the schools has been going on for years, precipitated by several of the protesters. In 2013 the state and the ADL both determined that NPS had fair and balanced curriculum. All parents are welcome to read their students curriculum; it is not hidden.
If residents received a different email, it was a concerted effort to deceive its recipients, not a misunderstanding.
Emails about city wide community events will be from the Mayor and on the city website.

Greg, with all due respect, I indicated right from the beginning I was not there so that was a redundant qualification that was brought up. Still, as a point of departure, I see the Clinton example as worthy of contemplation and consideration.

Thanks Mom_from_newton. That was a pretty strong video and I watched with an open mind and I have to admit I agree with their cause.
If the schools want to promote critical thinking by seeing both sides, then why don’t we promote critical thinking of both sides in slavery. why don’t we have a curriculum for slave owners who got cheap labor and was able to keep product price low due to slavery. Once slavery ended, I am sure product went up. Let’s teach that (and I despise even saying or thinking it) and the Jews don’t have anything to complain about. because your being consistent across the board. You took a sensitive issue where the Jews are fighting for their existence everyday and you turned it into a laughable moment. I am surprised at all the resistence from the school committee when most of them are Jewish.
I’m not sure if the palestinian perspective has anything to do with the swastikas, but as long as there are no changes the point can always be made. The material is offensive, in my opinion. I would say drop the Jewish-palestinian part of the curiculum….it’s too sensitive.
People want to get rid of Israel and you want to spin it as positive critical thinking exercise? I know that wasn’t the intent, but that is what it looks like. The Mayor claims he wants everyone to look at each others perspective and he wants people to accept different perspectives and yet he neglected this opinion. Shame on him.
All that being said, the protesters don’t do themselves any justice by booing or heckling fellow speakers. There’s a right way and a wrong way of getting things done in the city and this is wrong. I know they’ve tried to go through the right channels and no one was listening and they probably felt desperate, but this shouldn’t happen again….in my opinion.
Also, as far as this curiculum causing the graffiti? We don’t know, we probably will never know. We have a problem in the schools, I am assuming the graffiti was done by a child and I am assuming the kid has gone through this type of “critical thinking” exercise, where it says to students, “it’s OK to be against Israel.”

Showing force a tried-and-true PR move meant to control a discussion. It’s clear to me that it’s exactly what the ironically named “Peace and Tolerance” group did here. They put out a call to like-minded people to show up and force a conversation to go in their direction.
The media got sucked into this as expected. It was aimed at them. Had channel 7 and the Globe come to the meeting and had only a few soundbites, they probably would have written shorter stories, showed some of the now-old shots from Day Middle School and given the mayor a quote or two.
This meeting was clearly hijacked. Now, we have two choices.
1) We let the discussion continue this way and focus ONLY on the anti-semitism; or
2) We examine the bigger issues of tolerance in this city and being a beacon for other communities.
I vote for option #2.

Sorry video is the ramblings of a crazy person. I am not expert on antisemitism but the American Defamation League is. The ADL researched the Americans for Peace and Tolerance claims and found them to be without merit. http://newengland.adl.org/news/jcrc-adl-joint-statement/

We are all ignoring the fact that there are real problems in Newton. When administration in Newton Publc Schools ignores hate speech for months, then this is a problem. And yet nothing is being done to fix it. Change can’t come in Newton Public Schools with actually making a change.
