Well since we already have the GIS data we should work with Code For America to launch their Adopt a hydrant program in Newton like they did in Boston! It would allow residents to mark hydrants they will shovel out and allow the fire dept to prioritize which ones they go out and clean so at to make sure they get the hydrants that are most likely to be covered first.

Greg, you’re psychic! I was just thinking I should see if there was a GIS map like this.
I see it has fire boxes, too. Does anyone know, are the water mains in the legend a separate system just for the hydrants? I think I read somewhere about separate water systems for hydrants. But maybe that’s just big cities? Otherwise why would hydrant flushing affect house water.
You think I’m psychic about that? I predict it’s going to snow tonight but be hot in July.
Alison Leary shared that with us last night, very helpful. Unfortunately, my nearest hydrant appears to be buried in a 10′ high, approx 15′ by 10′ plow-valanche on the corner of Charlesbank and Nonantum Pl, and I’m not sure under which part of the massive corner snowbank it is located . Gonna have to figure that one out somehow.
Totally forgot that that I left the prior comment in another thread. The pile has grown 3′, I like this version better
Doug, I suggest you use Google maps with the “street view” to attempt to locate the hydrant.
Patrick, I had a brain blast and did just that before coming back here to see your comment. The hydrant is a little further up than the map shows, so I might have a better shot at it. When I get back out there. Thanks
Doug, you are welcomed. Technology is a wonderful thing when it works. FWIIW, it appears on Google Maps that the hydrant is actually in front of #227 not #185 as shown on the city map. Also the fire call box is located on the wall of #227 next to the entrance door as oppose to being near #185.
To add to the confusion, that is 227 Washington St. next to 185 Charlesbank Rd. Logic was one of the casualties of the Mass Pike Rift.
The city’s website has now been revised and improved – they’ve made it easy to locate the nearest hydrant so we can join in and help adopt a hydrant:
You can link to the map of Newton’s fire hydrants from the Home Page of the City of Newton’s website.
Thanks to all those who contributed to make this happen.
To clarify what happened with me- that map is great, but location of hydrant may be approximate, so look around (or use Google Maps Street View) before freaking out like I did.
This from the FD website re: improving accuracy of the map:
