I’m not entirely certain if these records are still current, but….
- Newton North’s girls softball team is undefeated.
- As of April 30, Newton North’s boys baseball team was also undefeated.
- And so was the girls outdoor track team.
If you know more about this. these teams or other teams, than me (and I don’t really follow this, I just stumbled upon it by accident). Please share in the comments section.
The baseball team had their first loss yesterday. One of their pitchers, Spencer Anderson, is performing a violin concerto with New Phil next weekend and came from the game to rehearsal last night and told us. Bummer! (But boy is he playing one heck of a concerto!)
That Spencer is a Renaissance kid (I know him going back to Little League)!
I caught the last inning yesterday after the JV game ended (also a loss, only their second; my son plays for that team), and the Tigers had a man on second in the 9th inning, but couldn’t get that tying run across. If I recall correctly that North is (was) ranked #2 in the state, then Braintree’s celebration after the last out was not out of place. Good game, and these teams are fun to watch.
By the way, if you would like to come out to support any of the teams, this site has an up-to-date schedule with field locations and game times, from Frosh to JV to Varsity: http://schedules.schedulestar.com/Newton-North-High-School-Newton-MA.
I spend most of the time following my son’s games when he is playing, but get to others as I can (the girls’ volleyball state championship match this fall was a lot of fun, and went to support the girls and boys teams in one of the indoor track state meets at the Reggie Lewis Center this winter).
I saw one game last year and it was just as enjoyable and far less of a hassle than Fenway. I know why Doug must be excited about his son and the team. The Brighton Braves who play in the Boston City League at Rogers Park are also great to watch. Just like the New Phil shows you don’t have to go to the BSO for good classical music, there are also a lot of exciting venues in local sports as well. I must get over to Newton South to see my neighbor Liam Brandel play football this fall, and maybe later on when he wrestles.
Newton North baseball team just selected as the #1 seed in the inaugural Super 8 baseball tournament. I wish them well starting with their game Wednesday versus Catholic Memorial. NN ballplayers and students, who have Joe Siciliano as a teacher, are very fortunate to have a role model for how adults should conduct themselves, both on the athletic field and in the classroom.
Patrick,
Thanks for beating me to the punch. Dan Shaughnessy (a Newton Corner resident and former NNHS and varsity baseball parent) wrote a profile of Sis in the Globe yesterday: http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/05/27/newton-north-joe-siciliano-diamond-gem/yKhffQzlkJzy4NtbL8YTfN/story.html.
The opening game vs CM was postponed due to a wet field, and is being played today at 4pm at North.
ny updates from the other teams? Lacrosse, softball, track, etc?
I believe Boys Volleyball and Lax both lost their first round games yesterday (congrats on great seasons) and Girls Lax won. Lots of NNHS teams made it to the post-season this year – follow @NNHSTigers for news and updates.
Thanks Tricia- for a direct link: https://twitter.com/nnhstigers.
I wasn’t able to find a Twitter feed for South (anyone?), but their athletics page is at: http://nshs.newton.k12.ma.us/athletics
@Doug, thank you for the link. As Dan S. writes in the article, Joe deserves the recognition. The team also deserves the recognition for all of their effort and commitment this season.
The Tigers baseball team battled Catholic Memorial to a draw after 13 innings. They were down 4-0 in the 7th and rallied. Game resumes today: http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/high-school/post/_/id/32277/super-8-newton-north-cm-suspend-play-in-14th-inning.
For those interested, I took a few decidedly amateur photos while I was there yesterday: https://www.flickr.com/photos/doughaslam/sets/72157644965560663/
Ran into one of the South boys volleyball parents, and heard that they beat Wellesley to advance in their tournament- Wicked Local has some details: http://newton.wickedlocal.com/article/20140529/SPORTS/140525922/12429/SPORTS
