Early voting for the March 3 presidential primaries and Northland ballot refendum has closed. Newton has 61,083 registered voters. Here’s how many ballots were cast according to City Clerk David Olson:
4,613 ballots were cast in the Presidential Primary during early voting.
4,534 ballots were cast in the local ballot question during early voting.

I decided not to vote early because the one time I tried, it was more crowded and took longer than going to my very pleasant polling place. I’m also always a little squeamish about the idea of voting early in case something happens in the last few days before the election that changes how I’d vote.
I know how I’m voting on NOrthland…but didn’t take advantage of early voting because I haven’t decided on which Dem to vote for (since Yang dropped out).

If you strip away all the emotion and stick only with facts: the only ones who have actual accomplished and built anything are the 2 billionaires.
Its a undisputed fact that NYC was governed well and prospered and crime dropped.
You can pick someone who is a saint, ticks every liberal checkbox and have no idea how to run anything. Do you judge your manager by their beliefs or getting 5h*t done?
I mean, that’s a bit of an over exaggeration @Bugek. Warren established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Biden has a quite established legislative history (both good and bad) with lots of landmark bills (again both good and bad), and you can make the same argument as Bloomberg with Buttigieg by just switching NYC with South Bend.
It’s also an undisputed fact that the ethos that “95% of your murders and murderers and murder victims fit one M.O. You can just take the description and Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops. They are male minorities 15 to 25” governed NYC under Bloomberg, because those are his exact words.

I guess I’m trying to frame it this way: If you have a company with 300 million customers, which person would you hire to run it?
If you don’t look at it this way, then I would say the answer is Sanders. The most passionate and honest. I believe he will get us “free” healthcare but at a massive cost to the country (taxes).. but at least we will finally have it
I’m intrigued that such a high percentage of early voters voted on the ballot question. I wonder if we’ll see similar results on Election Day.

I get the, “(person) has run a business” argument, but flipping parties raises the sincerity flag, like expecting a civic leader to adequately support Public Schools, when they sent their kids Private, or elected officials who CAN take public transportation into Boston for work, yet choose to drive instead.
I’m leaning towards, “genuine” and “ability to reach across the aisle”. If I had to vote RIGHT NOW, I’m leaning towards Pete or Joe….but a few days to be convinced otherwise.

That’s an impressive early turnout. In the last city council/school committee election, a _total_ of 15,432 voted (25% of those registered). I don’t know how 4600 compares to early voting in that election, but I’m hoping, between the referendum and Super Tuesday, we’re going to see a pretty big total number. Perhaps that will clear the air and offer a clear signal of community sentiment on the referendum.
@Matt: Sanders is the only one who will (&has been) put his money where his mouth is. He’s not a corporate Dem (no wonder they’re so afraid of him;D)

For most people, early voting is a solution in search of a problem. I’ve never had to wait long to vote, even in the presidential elections. If you know you’ll be away on Election Day, it’s great. But most people have done it just because they can not because they needed to. I wonder how many early voters cast their ballots for Steyer and Mayor Pete.

I heard the tail end of a news report that said if you participated in early voting but your candidate dropped out, you can change your vote at your polling place. I couldn’t find any info online to support this, so take it for what it’s worth. Obviously, it doesn’t help if you voted early because you’ll be out of town. But it’s helpful for the people who voted for one of the three recent drop-outs.
Dan: that doesn’t sound right. How would they know which ballot not to count from early voting?
However I did hear that anyone who wants to vote no on the referendum has an extra day to do so. They can wait until Wednesday to avoid the crowds! 😉

I found the correct info. It’s absentee ballots that can be updated. From WBUR’s website:

If you early voted for a candidate who dropped out, like Pete Buttigieg or Amy Klobuchar, you can’t change your mind or vote again — all votes are final, said Galvin.
If you voted by absentee ballot, you can call it back, but only if you show up at your usual polling place first thing Tuesday morning and ask for it back. You can then exchange it and vote on a regular ballot. The absentee one would be discarded, said Galvin.
