If there’s a fire the firefighters would hook up to the next closest hydrant. Two of the hydrants on my dead-end street were covered like this last week and the covers were gone later the same day.

Maybe the hydrant’s broken (stuck bolt or the like) and the sign’s there to keep fire fighters from wasting time. I assume they plan to fix it ASAP.

Thanks MGWA and phred: I actually saw two covered hydrants this morning, both within two blocks of each other.

Maybe they were just repainted.
A simple call to Newton Fire will clear it up. Must be a slow news day for Village 14.
