Speaking of the Auburndale Community Library (see below), they’ve organized their first ever “all community read”. The way it works is to get as many people in Newton to read the same book at the same time. They’ve picked a good one too.
Just Mercy by Byran Stevenson was named one of the Best Books of the Year by The New York Times, the Washington Post, The Boston Globe, the Seattle Times, Esquire and Time.
“Every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so . . .”—David Cole, The New York Review of Books
“Searing, moving . . . Bryan Stevenson may, indeed, be America’s Mandela.”—Nicholas Kristof, The New York Times
“You don’t have to read too long to start cheering for this man. . . . The message of this book . . . is that evil can be overcome, a difference can be made. Just Mercy will make you upset and it will make you hopeful.”—Ted Conover, The New York Times Book Review
So run out and get a copy, read it, and then come to the Auburndale Community Library next Saturday, Dec 5 at 11:30 to talk about it with your neighbors. Retired judge and author Gordon Moore will lead the talk.
Thanks go to Kathleen Maguire for putting this all together. If it goes well, Kathleen and the ACL hope to make this a regular citywide activity.
This is one of those ‘how come no one thought of this before’ ideas. At least it’s one I’ve never heard of before.
Very cool – !
Fabulous idea that I hope they try again on a date I can attend!
Kathleen says even if you haven’t read it by then, come to saturday’s event at the library anyway. They’ll have copies for sale there.
