As Bob Dylan once said “you’ve got to serve somebody“, so sign up today to take part in on of the 35 or so different volunteer projects all around the city on Sunday for the annual NewtonSERVES event.
Its a great way to meet some of your neighbors and help out our community. There are projects and tasks of all different kinds – some inside, some outside.
Today is the last day to register so sign up here.
Great event, but I am still salty that there’s no longer the Cabot’s party at the end. I feel like a lot of Newton traditions have fallen by the wayside over the past few years – many of them BEFORE the pandemic. No more Heartbreak Hill Road Race, no more Picnic and Play at the Park, and now no more celebration after NewtonServes. I’m sure there are more that I’m missing. But it’s just a little sad to me.
One overlooked was unelected citizens freely contributing their skill and time to City government. Excepting Jonathan Yeo, whose dedication and long hours justify drawing salary, it is pretty ugly to have affluent community leaders drawing a paycheck, political patronage or otherwise.
