Its funny how one thing leads to another ….
At the very beginning of the Covid lockdown, two friends, Anne Marie Stein and Tatjana Meschede were climbing the walls with their Covid isolation.
They decided that they would regularly get out for a walk together. They started with walks around their neighborhood in Thompsonville. Their walks started getting longer and longer with routes beginning to wander all over the city.
One of the things they soon noticed was that there was a lot of construction in progress around the city with houses being demolished and replaced. Anne Marie is a photographer so she began bringing her camera along and photographing all the newly built houses. In a few spots they knew what sort of house these new houses were replacing, in most cases though they didn’t. By the time they spotted the construction, the original house was most often already demolished.
They decided to start monitoring the demolition permits that were being issued by the city. Once a permit was issued, they’d quickly find the house and take photos of the original house before the demolition began.
Three years have gone by since they began this project. In that time they’ve logged well over 1000 miles of walking to every corner of the city on foot and they’ve documented a large number of all the houses that have recently been demolished and quite a few of the houses that replaced them.
Sounds fascinating!
Thank you both for this incredible project!
