For the next 6 Sundays from 6-7:30 you can enjoy outdoor concerts at the Newton Centre Bowl (the open area below the hut off Tyler Terrace in the Newton Centre Playground). You can find more information on the bands on the Newton Parks & Recreation website’s events page.
At least the selection of acts reflects Newton’s lack of diversity accurately.
Great pitch, Pedro! That’s on Newton Parks & Rec for not making diversity a point of emphasis. I hope they’ll note your comment, and make a better effort to be more inclusive with next year’s concert series.
Perhaps you want to force people to listen to music that they don’t want to hear? Should we have musicians from all around the world performing? Let’s get real and let the Parks department present whomever they want. If nobody shows up what will that prove?
@Jackson joe – what makes you so sure that people don’t want to hear more types of music? Many of us in Newton would enjoy hearing musicians from all over the world (there are plenty in the Boston area). I have yet to see a free outdoor concert in Newton Centre that didn’t draw anyone if the weather was decent. No type of music appeals to everyone, and that’s fine – if you don’t like it, don’t go.
@Meredith. I don’t object to any kind of music being presented from anywhere around the world. I do object to the insinuation that the promoter must present other brands of music or risk being labeled as being non inclusive or worse.
I was walking my dog through Newton Centre around 7:30 and was amazed how hopping it was including all the outdoor dining. This must be contributing. And the lovely cool night. Hard to find a parking spot on the street and the triangle was probably 80% full
I wish the city would consider converting the triangle to 2-3 floors of underground parking (triple the capacity) with more retail, restaurants, and an expansion of the park at street level. Perhaps a true hatch shell type venue or a fountain or something. more parking would benefit the push for mass transit on the D line, would allow for more accessibility for the businesses in newton center, and would allow for growth in our commercial footprint (more tax dollars to pay for civil services!).
Let’s go Mayor Fuller, get rid of the current triangle for far better usage!
@Frank
Great idea but they think it’s too expensive to do (especially if it was done right).
Jackson – did some quick google research. Average cost 25-50K per space for underground parking. Let’s say we got middle pricing at 37.K per space. We currently have 148 spaces in the lot. If we double that to 300, that would cost 11.25 million. To be safe and account for other work, lets round up to 15 mil. Sounds like the money spent on Webster Woods. I’m sure we can find 15 mil somewhere to improve our city center, increase revenue (from the lot and the new businesses above it), and improve quality of life through new public space.
Isn’t this the type of development we can all get behind?
