From the Stow Conservation Department:
| Newton MA News and Politics BlogThis is our annual reminder for residents and trail users that it is coyote pup season. It is recommended that you leash your dogs when on the trails in May and June as the adults and pups may be out exploring in the daytime. Coyotes are protective of their young and will behave aggressively toward dogs (of any size) that get too close. Their behaviors might include growling, arching their backs, and if still unheeded, they will lunge at or nip the hindquarters of an approaching dog. Keep your dog close and be observant on the trails. Also, this is NOT the time of year to try to scare coyotes by waving your arms or banging pots.

If you see them, please just walk quietly in the opposite direction and let them be. Adults may follow briefly to “escort” you from the area and this is also normal. They are not stalking you, they just want to make sure you are really leaving. Thanks!
