John Hilliard reports in the Boston Globe that the city has just completed a detailed survey of the city’s 414 miles of sidewalks to determine their current condition.
If it was a real report card I’d say it sounds like about a C. Mayor Fuller says “The majority of the city’s sidewalks are in “excellent to fair condition, but about one-fifth of Newton’s sidewalks require replacement or significant repairs.” .
The mayor reports that since she took office in 2018, 31 miles of sidewalks have already been repaired. This sidewalk survey will guide the next phase of the sidewalk rehabilitation program and will be used to set the priorities of which sidewalks need repairs the most.
Newton’s Public Works Department also is continuing to make repairs on sidewalk issues reported through the city’s 311 system, which is available through newtonma.gov (click on the “Newton 311″ button).
