Bob Burke, our good friend and Village14 contributor, and his sister Joanne are leaving town soon. After a lifetime in Newton they will soon be moving to Marlboro.
Come celebrate Bob and Joanne’s 85 years of community activism in Newton.
Sunday, April 24, 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Newton Highlands Woman’s Club
72 Columbus Street Newton Highland
Bob has always been one of the best things about Village 14. His good humor, his common sense, his unflagging civility, and the twinkle in his eye are all great antidotes to the often acrimonious outburst that regularly happen here.
Here’s one of my all time favorite Bob posts about riding bicycles on Route 128 in the 50’s and another wonderful one about his crew of 8th and 9th grade friends riding bikes to Mount Monadnock, unaccompanied by any meddlesome adults. And here’s a video of Bob telling the story of hiding an aircraft carrier when he was in the Navy.
We’re going to miss him. I do believe they have the Internet out in Marlboro so maybe he’ll still be checking in here on Village14.
Aww Bob. I hope you’ll still pop in here with your stories and level headed input on local news.
Bob, we will miss you here in town (city!). Best of luck for the move to Marlboro, and I will do my best to pop by on Sunday.
A strike at the heart and soul of Newton. Best of luck Bob.
Bob, I may not make it on Sunday, but I will miss you. You are always a deep source of knowledge and a moderating voice. I certainly hope they have Internet where you’ll be residing so that we may continue to hear your voice.
Any community would be lucky to have Bob Burke. It’s been our good fortune to have him in Newton. I’ve learned much from his thoughtful [and always respectful] comments on Village 14. Bob may be moving to Marlboro, but I know his heart will remain in Newton. So I’m sure he’ll continue to comment here on V-14.
Oh Bob, You are awesome and we all wish you and Joanne the very best, Take care my friend, Hopefully you’ll visit us sometime,
Truly a good guy.
Bob, you will be missed so very much. Wishing you and Joanne the very best in your new home in Marlboro. I will never forget canvassing with you. May I come and drive you to knock on a few doors before the midterms? See you both on Sunday.
Bob – Your graciousness and good will have set a positive example. If Councilor Brian Yates were still with us he would find a suitable reference from the classics to describe you and your contribution to Newton. In the absence of that, let me simply add my voice to those who wish you well in Marlboro. All the best,
Bob – A family commitment has me out of town on Sunday, but I really wanted to wish you the best in your new home. It’s been a delight getting to know you and learning from you over the years. Your immediate presence will be missed, but I hope you will still find ways of being present here in Newton with us going forward.
I am coaching the team at that time but will try to pass by afterward. If not, best of luck in the future! A sad day for Newton, perhaps, but much happiness in the days ahead to our respected elder statesman.
I had to bounce early, but was glad to see Bob and even more glad to see the turnout, including a healthy representation of the City Council. As one speaker put it, it’s not goodbye, Bob. You’ll just be over in the Wild West of Marlborough, and I hope you will swing by here with your wealth of historical perspective and common sense.
I’m trying to get a number or address to mail for them so my mom can connect. My mother is a close friend from decades ago but all her phone numbers aren’t working. Any help would be appreciated. Her name is Ann Pattison
I am a very old friend of both Bob and Joanne and I do not have their new address. Could you please let me know how I can contact them?
