This past weekend the Newton Nomadic Theater tentatively dipped its toe in the waters to see if our audience was ready for indoor theater again after a year and 3/4 long Covid hiatus … and wow were they ever. We announced a Fri and Sat show at the brand new Allen House and the tickets sold out in less than two days. We added a 3rd show and the tickets were gone in less than a day.
Miss Delta Township is a roller coaster ride of a one woman show by Joanne Powers – funny, moving, uproarious, insane and surreal. The audiences this weekend just loved it. At all three shows the audience was on their feet clapping and hooting wildly and calling Ms Powers back again and again for one more bow.
Both they and we were SO happy to be back in the theater again … and what a theater it is. This new performance space in the recently restored historic Nathaniel Allen House is wonderful and audiences seemed to revel in seeing it for the first time
So she’s coming back! Miss Delta Township is returning for three more performances at the Allen House on Fri Nov 19 7:30 PM, Sat Nov 20 7:30 PM and Sun Nov 21 3PM

I don’t think I’ve enjoyed any live play more than I did yesterday’s remarkable solo performance by Joanne Powers’ of “Miss Delta Township” at the Allen House theater. Joanne wrote the play herself based on her personal experiences growing up in a quite dysfunctional family in a conservative Michigan township from the early 1960’s to the turn of the century. Brilliant script, brilliant performance and nice, but measured sound effects and music. She’s a warm and engaging artist. While this was the last scheduled Newton performance, Joanne plans to have additional shows in the area. Hats off to Jerry Reilly and a host of other volunteers who have made the Nomad Theater a real cultural treasure for Newton. Earlier in the week, I saw the movie “Belfast” which is one of the best films I have been to in recent years. A great two fer in entertainment here.
